I remember when the jack in the trunk was a “high lift” in most cars. Not the brand but that style, not quite as heavy duty but the same design. Yes they’ll fuck you up but there’s no real substitute for a high clearance vehicle even on pavement. It’s the only jack that has enough lift for my Power Wagon. You can’t see it on my truck because it’s mounted inside the bed. I don’t even have a lift on it.

Your factory supplied spare tire changing jack doesn't work, even on pavement?

What surprises me on all those external mounted Hi Lift jacks is how few people use a cover. A rusted Hi Lift is dangerous and may not even work.

It astounds me how many people have a hi-lift and it's obvious they've never even used it. They can seriously fuck you up if you don't use it properly. Same goes for a winch. (I was trained by Bill Burke of Camel Trophy fame back in the day when I did a lot of wheeling and led trails for a 4x4 club, like almost 20 years ago). Crazy how everything has come full-circle.

i bought a 9000 pound van that came with a hi-lift jack mounted to the back. I tested it out on my driveway. I could lift the rear wheel 1/4 inch off the ground, that's it. My wife has two clicks short of doing that, strength-wise. So unless i'm alone 4x4ing and might need it to put a traction mat under my wheel (i'd have to use the hook that grabs the wheel instead of placing it under the frame, then it would go much more up than 1/4 inch), it is now living in my garage. I had to buy a military hummer scissor jack instead because it actually works. (not saying it doesn't work on smaller lighter rigs with shorter wheelbases). I was duped into thinking it was the only solution on a big van until....I actually used it. WTF.

How come no one straps their scissor or bottle jack to the outside? Maybe I should start that!

Plenty of bottle jacks out there with enough clearance. That and a couple wood blocks gives you enough to cover your bases.

When i got a flat seriuosly in the middle of nowhere on a 2 ton delivery van with 20" wheels I discovered
I couldn't lift the wheel but there was a shovel in the crewcab so I used the blade under the tire to lever it up on to the hub with my foot, a good reason to have a shovel all the time

i have since seen you toobes of small chinese women changing tires on big rigs with just a pry bar

I’ve used a HiLift successfully a few times as was pretty stoked to have it. One time was above tree line and a thunderstorm/ snow storm was moving in. If we hadn’t got out when we did my buddy’s truck would have been there till the following June.

You generally need steel bumpers and sliders to really make them useful though. A shovel is a basic must have as is an axe.

Maybe we should market a lightweight aluminum HiLift replica that doesn’t actually have any moving parts. Keep the weight down while still peacocking around town.
