SoCal woman missing in Zion Natl Park for 2 weeks is fine?!?

Searched and didnt see a thread on this...

This was kinda on my radar as I always find it interesting when people wander into Zion or similar solo and get lost having spent a ton of time in Southern Utah in my youth & early 20s
Now she was found and OK>??

    OK...

Seems I am not the only skeptic

"An official who aided in the search for Holly Suzanne Courtier, the woman who was found nearly two weeks after disappearing during a hike in Zion National Park, is questioning her family's story of how she survived with little water and no food.

Courtier, a 38-year-old from California, was found on Sunday about a half-mile from the parking lot where she began what was supposed to be a day hike through the Utah park.

In a Sunday statement, Zion National Park officials said Courtier was found in a thickly-vegetated area near the Virgin River.

Sgt. Darrell Cashin, who served as an advisor in the park's search efforts for Courtier, told ABC 4 she left California in the middle of the night without without telling her family where she was going.

    Discrepancies about the water source
Courtier's daughter, Kailey Chambers, told CNN on Tuesday that her mother had hit her head early on in the hike, and then decided to stick close to a river, thinking it was her best shot at survival. Chambers did not say whether Courtier drank from the river, and CNN said it was not clear from the interview whether the water was potable.

Cashin, who works for the Washington County Sheriff's Search and Rescue, said it's likely Courtier would have died if she drank from it.

Sgt. Darrell Cashin has questioned parts of the Courtier family's story of how Holly survived for nearly two weeks in Zion National Park. ABC 4
"If she had been drinking that water, unless she had some really high immune system, she would've been very, very ill and probably unable to come out on her own," Cashin told ABC 4.

"She either took a lot of water with her or had another clean water source that was near here, but the Virgin River is not that source."

Cashin also told the local St. George News: "Had she been drinking that water, she would be extremely ill or passed on by now. If she did have a good water source, what was it?"

'Was she that bad or was she not?'
Cashin pointed out other discrepancies in the family's story.

Chambers told CNN that Courtier recounted that during her time in the park, she became so dehydrated that she couldn't open her mouth.

Cashin said this did not line up with the statement park officials released when Courtier was found, saying she was "able to leave of her own capability with minimal assistance."

"Was she that bad or was she not?" Cashin told St. George News.

He said that if Courtier had really hit her head, and if she was as dehydrated as she told her family, search-and-rescue teams would have immediately called an ambulance when they found her.

Courtier spent the night at the hotel after she was found, CNN reported, though it is not clear who took her there.

"If we had found somebody in that condition with that kind of severe head injury, we would have at minimum called for a transport agency to check her out," Cashin told ABC 4. "The fact that that didn't happen tells me that they did not find any significant injury to her that would've prompted them to do that."

"The statements that the family is giving and the statements that the park is giving don't add up," he added. "Those are the types of questions I think everybody has. I think the place where that question can be answered is with her."

Neither Courtier's daughter nor Zion National Park immediately responded to Insider's request for comment."

You could have saved a bunch of investigation time by just going with "crazy eyes."

It makes perfect sense...until you think about it.

I suspect there's logic behind the madness, but I'm too dumb to see it.

Jesus, yall not lying about the crazy eyes.

I got called out on a despondent search in Pisgah earlier in the week. 27 y/o veteran went hiking without telling anyone. Didn't take his meds. Car was found at a trailhead off the Parkway. You can probably guess where this is going...Already missing for close to a week when my squad got asked to provide mutual aid. I went up after class on Tuesday. As soon as my brief started the IC got the radio call. Family and friends were sitting in the next tent over. Dogs found him. Sad shit, man.

Beyond roads end people hike up the river--a lot of people. If she was indeed found by the river how would she not be seen for 2 weeks. And a concussion leaving someone unable to walk for 2 weeks?

A SAR story--woman goes missing from a tour group hiking in Iceland. Local SAR is called out (apparently being on a SAR team is very popular in Iceland) and they search for hours before realizing the "victim" was one of the people helping with the search. She had changed her jacket and none of the other people in the tour group recognized her.

It will be interesting to see if the sheriff's office actually investigates this further or just leaves it be.

she was found after a credible tip.

I'm trying to picture a situation where a person would give a credible tip instead of immediately rendering assistance.

The online hordes are calling for her head for wasting all the SAR resources... which is valid, to a degree: it seemed fairly likely from the beginning that this was a mental health issue, which is just as tragic and devastating as if she had just gotten injured and lost.

This was the first thing that seemed weird to me. if someone saw here why didn't they just help her get out? Was she across a chasm or something?

    I'm just confused, gotta admit.

just looked at a map and it appears that there is a drainage with a perennial water source that comes into the Virgin just about half a mile from the parking area.

hide in the brush during the day, go pump water flowing out of the emerald pools at night?

The only possible explanation that I can posit which does not involve some Mickey Mouse bullshit on the part of the lady is this: she sustained an anomaly of a head injury which rendered her unconscious or incredibly disoriented. She came to and had no idea where she was but was able to find the drainage mentioned by Lone Star. She figured it best to stay where she was and did just that. Is this explanation logical? No, not really but shit like this rarely is.
