Seriously.
What a pack if assholes. Revving their engines to the max in a residential area. Has to be noise violation even in Moronia

I looked through a pair of Swarovision EL. WOW. They are truly amazing optics.
That is what you would expect a NYC Harvard grad Audubon board member to have, eh? $3K optic for his bird watching doesn't stack up very high against the retail price for a set of carbon skis, bindings, boots, skins, bsp, airbag pack... those binocs are 1/3 the price of a high end carbon roadbike or mtb.
Now, when the birder whips out a 600mm f/4 camera lens on a top end body with a RRS carbon tripod/head/plates, that's super $$$$$ on the level of the custom high end carbon bike!
Since I spent my money on skis and bikes, I don't have $3K to drop on binocs so I bought $650 used Canon 15x50 IS from a pawn shop. Second choice would have been some Vortex Razor HDs.Originally Posted by blurred

Most noise statutes have timeframes associated with them. I think our local doesn't kick in until like 10pm and is lifted by 7am. Not that it would ever be enforced out here in the county.
I've been on a bunch of car cruises and outside of peeling out of an Arby's parking lot that the c&c crowd prefers, most tended to head to rural roads with turns, not suburban culdesacs. These guys just seem like douchebags.Live Free or Die

http://texascarlaws.com/exhaust-noise/
(a) A motor vehicle shall be equipped with a muffler in good working condition that continually operates to prevent excessive or unusual noise.
(b) A person may not use a muffler cutout, bypass, or similar device on a motor vehicle.
Every one of those guys was probably violating (a) and some were probably violating (b) as well. Not that exhaust noise ordinances are ever enforced.
I think this applies: https://southpark.cc.com/clips/25481...-brrub-brrrrub
Personally, I would not have stood in the middle of the road while calling the cops. If you should know anything as an American by now, it's that cops are likely to escalate the situation, not diffuse it. Involving the cops in a non-emergency situation like this can definitely go sideways for you. Extremely douchey but otherwise non-threatening behavior isn't worth the personal risk. It would have been a lot more fun to just sit on the lawn with a garden hose and the sprayer set to "Jet."

Swaro ELs are a status symbol in some circles. Zeiss SL or FL, Leica Noctavid or Ultravid and Nikon EDG are peers. Resolution of modern alpha bins is finer than the human eye can detect and modern alpha glass light transmission has approached its physical limit, thus it comes down to personal preference and how the bins' chromatic aberration correction works with your eyes. Swaro EL flat field correction is an issue for those (rare) users who hold their bins still and roll their eyeballs from edge to edge. (Zeiss SL is the winner on that.)
As a general rule, Karens do not bird, but if they did, they'd sport ELs. Some of the best birders I hang with use $300 Nikon Monarch 5s.

For me, I get resolution out of the Image Stabilizer of the (relatively) much cheaper Canons that vastly exceeds any benefit of slightly higher end CA correcting elements or fancy zeiss/leica/swaro coatings. Also, it works amazing for astro.
But, if I'm hiking or hunting I have some bargain $90 Pentax Gameseekers, cuz IS has a weight penalty.Originally Posted by blurred

Yeah, that also. Like noise ordinances, rarely enforced. Most of those cars probably don't even meet those laws from the factory. ZL1's and Demon's aren't exactly quiet stock. Chrysler made Neon's in the early 2000's with just straight pipes also. Neons! If they are going to flaunt it on the Karen in training level car, doubt the performance models are meeting spec. Not that I necessarily agree with such laws in concept, but these guys are sure prime examples how they get enacted.

I'm a bit suspect of the birdwatching angle. The only birds I see in Central Park are pigeons, house sparrows and the resident waterfowl.

Nikons? Really?
Pffft.
I guess she doesn’t care much about seeing the wing color patterns on a Northern Goshawk from 100 yards.
Nikons. Ha.

My light cheap carries are Monarchs x8 or Vipers x10. If I want to get up close, I have a couple of Razor spotters. I've side by sided those with Swaros and my eyes can't see much difference for an extra couple K. But yeah, Mr. Birder has some nice glass.

So now dumb white trash are using 'Karen' to anyone who calls them out on their bullshit? Pretty sure my wife would have gone outside and given all those assholes the finger and yelled at them.

That's the one. The Nikon I bought. Sure, there's better, but, that much? It's like the 1000 dollar plus grinders people talk about in the espresso thread? Really?
Btw, if you have a Cabelas nearby, they have a really good selection to check out, and the store is so damn big you get some good distance.

FFS let me google that for you - 230 species of birds sighted in the Ramble - Maybe you should ask Christian Cooper to show you how to spot birds?

This birding thing is a bunch of birdshit if you ask me. You can go out into the woods with a pair of binoculars and a notebook, write down some names of birds and everyone just believes you? Hey, I saw a dodo bird everyone.
I'd wager half of those dudes with binoculars in Central Park are probably looking at chicks sunbathing, or other dudes."timberridge is terminally vapid" -- a fortune cookie in Yueyang

Birding sounds similar but cooler than golf in a lot of ways.
