Just finished the series and I will say it was very well made and quite enjoyable. Although, I still don't know how I feel about the whole thing being done in English. While I'm glad I didn't have to read the whole thing, it just seemed slightly inauthentic to have Boris, Anatoly, and Viktor yelling at eachother in British accents while reading and writing in a cryllic Russain alphabet. I've been on a Narcos kick recently, and the Spanish makes the show seem all the more real.

The podcast addresses this decision. If you notice, all of the actors speak in their native accents, not necessarily “British.”

Brilliant TV series and no surprise that, even now, the Russians still won't accept the full truth.....

First five to ten minutes of episode 5 was brilliant. The angry man carrying a black breifcase.

Bravo to HBO. Dont fuck up that service, AT&T, but supposedly they're doing it as I type. They've already fired some long term execs at HBO.

And the Berkeley campus used to have a 1Mw reactor in/under Etcheverry Hall; they decommissioned it in 1987, a few years after a supposedly minor incident.

I guess when you consider the alternatives, English speaking actors using fake Russian accents (remember Sean Connery & Tim Curry in "Hunt For Red October"?) or Russian actors speaking Russian with subs (also annoying) this probably makes more sense. About a year ago Netflix did a movie called "The Death of Stalin". It also had an all English speaking cast that IIRC spoke in their native accents. Steve Buscemi played Nikita Kruschev. Was a little weird but the subject matter was a bit lighter than Chernobyl so it worked.

I also thought that while the series did a good job of pointing out the stupidity of the Soviet government, it made sure to separate them from the Soviet people, many of whom gave up a hell of a lot to keep this thing from deteriorating into an apocalyptic event.

Did you get it? I got it from the library, probably about halfway through. Whats your take on it? I think its ok, its just a collection of interviews from all kinds of different people who were impacted by the disaster. Not really a page turner IMO

Agreed, it’s depressing and poetic, very Russian. Every story blends together and seems to run on. I like it, but it’s not as good as I was hoping. It does give you a real feel for the collective nature of socialism. Remarkably brave and stubborn mindset they had.

Does this show get any good? Having a hard time with British-sound accents playing former USSR guys.
