Hey, over time, Jeter wins, of course, and this could all be wrapped up in the Moneyball argument. I thought he was making a big, crass mistake in his career when he went to Texas, and, I'll bet he'll agree, just like when he (or BoreAss, more likely) lost his last contract negotiation with the Yankees and had to crawl back on his knees holding his balls. Just imagine if he settled in at Seattle and made half of what he has signed for, but just relaxed and played the game and made his numbers. I mean, how much fucking money does somebody need, after all? Besides, Jeter will become the new Yogi Berra/Joe Dimaggio, spending his post career making millions a year until he dies just showing his face on the TV/web, advertising whatever. BoreAss won't get a piece of that, so he didn't tell him, I suppose.

Do you honestly think he is worse than Chipper Jones? 12.1 wins worse? Do you think Barry Bonds* deserves to be considered the second most valuable baseball player of all time? Obviously there is a combination of stats, but there is more to it than that.

Fielding for example. It has a number of double plays turned. Just because someone turns a double play doesn't make them an awesome fielder. Specular turns from diving, flipping, etc make a great fielder. Turns that literally make your jaw drop. Or outfield catches that were laid out that only a handful of guys could make due to speed and hands. These types of things contribute. You just can't see that from stats.

Spectacular catches can deceive you in a way that stats can't. For instance, if Jeter played more towards third he wouldn't need his trademark jump throw. He just cheats to second because he rarely makes plays behind the bag because and he never had good range in that direction to begin with.

The WAR list is interesting. I don't know if it values every player fairly, but I do think there's a good chance Jeter won't hang it up until he passes Honus Wagner on the hits list... hopefully before the end of this contract.

Yes. Obviously Jeter has more hits, but Jones has 454 career home runs and 1018 extra base hits compared to 240 and 797 for Jeter. That's a huge margin.

Totally disagree. Getting to lots of balls, making accurate throws and converting them into outs makes a good fielder. Acrobatics has nothing to do with it.

I'm a fan of baseball and good players. Something I can wrap my head around regardless of team affiliation. But name calling is par for the course for you so I'll take it with a grain of salt.

What I was getting at is, stats don't show HOW the play was made. A line drive that any little leaguer can catch to turn a double play isn't the same as legging out a one hop worm burner you have to dive to make the catch and still get up and turn it. In the eyes of stats, they are the same thing and I argue they aren't even close.

Not many people remember a game winning line drive unless it is a clutch game, but many people remember remarkable plays all season long.

That said, the best hitting team in the NL scored all of 1 run in Game 5 and it was in the first inning.

I think the Phils will be fine next year...I'd love to see them find a way to keep Madson, but several of the others will be moving on. Polanco, was aweful after April. Utley will be fine IF he ever gets healthy. Mayberry will fit in. I say we trade Brown before he shows teams he can't actually hit. Keep Victorino, Pence, and Ruiz. And Howard... that guy need to learn to hit a freakin curve ball.
