unfortunately 90% of that is rain up to 3000m
so about 50-70cm of snow above 2000m after it gets colder on sat morning, when the megarain ends. It's a war of the mind and we're armed to the teeth.

Axamer Lizum decides not to open this winter, could this be the beginning of a wave of closures?

I can see that being a concern, doesn’t seem like it is a hill that draws much other then Innsbruck area people either so it’s a different animal then Solden and the like, eh?
Speaking of Innsbruck locals, do not cross fernpass, nothing to see over here!!

That's part of the reason every one is up in arms. Not a huge hotel resort and does attract a lot of locals. Regional govt. is saying it's discriminating against Tiroleans. And yes, they are worried it'll kick off a wave of smaller resorts shutting down this season. Larger resorts that get international tourism will probably stay open, as loss of income and reputation will be too high.
But this is all conjecture on my part.
Fernpass you say?
Saturday looks like it'll bring some more snow.

Lizum scrapes by even in normal years. They may have more local visitors than other resorts but depending on the financial situation of a business, a 30% loss can push it past the point of viability just as well as a 90% loss. They put in a petition with the local govt to be exempted from a rule that forces them to stay open unless the govt mandates a shut down like last spring. With this rule you could technically have a situation where the big resorts with lots of money can choose to do the bare minimum that allows them to still adhere to the rule, which might be running a couple of lifts in a resort with dozens. Lizum does not have a lot of options in this regard, my understanding is they would either be open at more or less full cost, or closed. They have been flying snow cannons up the hill with helicopters, so I would assume it is fair to believe them when they say they intend to open and that this petition is a kind of insurance against a worst case scenario, with a possible side of political strategising. There is an ongoing legal dispute about whether the ancient "Epidemiegesetz" is to be applied for the couple of months between the beginning of the shutdowns and the passing of the new law that replaces the Epidemiegesetz. These laws regulate how and to what extent businesses are to be compensated by the govt in case of losses due to an epidemic. afaik the outcome of this dispute will have significant implications for the finances of many ski resorts.
The regional govt did not say Lizum is discriminating against Tyroleans, that was Markus Abwerzger, leader of the Tirol FPÖ (far right opposition party). My personal take is that Lizum probably does not actually intend to close but royally fucked up how they communicated this whole thing. The opposition parties, in particular the FPÖ, are actively shit stirring because that is what they do. The general sense of economic panic in Tyrol is very real because the Tyrolean economy is so dependent on tourism. If the Germans don't come this winter, a lot of businesses in Tyrol are going to go under. Panic, of course, lends itself to shit stirring.Ich bitte dich nur, weck mich nicht.

You're right of course, I should have said regional politics not regional govt. Getting the two mixed up as local mayors are complaining about the hit local tourism might take. And I also meant to say it was local politics that was the shit show / shit stirring.
I would not want to make the impression that I agree/align with ANYTHING that comes out of the FPÖ.
It seems I also didn't convey very well the reason why I think they asked for an exemption. I too think they still plan to open, but want to be able to pull the plug as quickly as possible if it all goes to shit. Could they have done that better? For Sure, but I reckon the tourism lobby (= local politicians) would have got their panties in a twist any which way if it meant a possible impact on the holy grail of seasonal record room bookings...
But again, this is all conjecture in my part and I defer to your better knowledge on these things.
And maybe this is the perfect excuse to finally go check out Biberwier, Lermoos and Ehrwald this season

welcome back klar.... cudos damit now you are the best skier on the thread again : )
my thoughts on axamer are like this.... the mighty olympia bahn will go out of service next spring. she has seen her 45years of service and the permit will expire next year.
so it will be difficult to release funds for a new project next year. a cablecar from the parkinglot to hoadl. and removal of the olympiabahn the quad and the double.
serving lizum only with the old parking lot quad and the top double chair. is to slow and not state of the art.
it is not about this season.... thats just strategic talk. axams, götzens and grinzens can´t put 50mil on the table and there is no tourism anymore in this area.
so if they cannot run 21/22, why bother this year.
fröschl just counts money,
same with glungezerbahn he owned from 1980 till 2010. he never invested anything there. thats how he runs things. he gave it back to the community for 1€ after running it for 30years.
edit: i am sure you have better funicular pornLIVE IS NOT A CHAIRLIFT

Getting the feeling a lot of it is about image too. If people in other countries start getting the message that "Resorts in Austria are closing!!" - truthful or not - then people arent going to be booking in the hotel resorts either.
All my eggs are in the basket that says this season happens and I'm 50 50 as to whether or not it actually will...

Shit I hadn't realised that the permit is running out! That explains a whole lot of whats going on. Esp. since the Schlick-Lizum Projekt fell through I can see them trying to use this as a bargaining chip to get what the want in the end. This might get pretty fucked up...
