Climb the mountains and get their good tidings. Natures peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. The winds will blow their own freshness into you, and the storms their energy, while cares will drop away from you like the leaves of Autumn. - John Muir

We're currently building our rig too.
Insulated with Thinsulate and EZ-Cool.
Heated with a gasoline Webasto.

I had to take the center post jack off and replace it with a folding side post. Also
with my tri-ball I usually tow with I didn't have enough clearance for basic maneuvering (the Tundra has a super tight turn radius, I may have been good on a Ford or Chevy). The tri ball has 7 inches of space from pin to ball center. My weight distributing hitch has 12 inches center to center and works way better. I can turn about 180 degrees at full lock before the jacks contact the trailer. I consider this to be good enough unless I really bugger something up. Also I'll have the jacks removed while on the road so I'll have an additional two inches or so of clearance.
No affiliation. Sounds like it has a posi rear dif but not awd

4x8sheet of plywood in the back of the suburban with a foam pad works alright. With enough whiskey it's plenty warm.

This would be an interesting project if I had the time and $. Assuming this is 4x4. I would take that flat bed, cut it down some. Put some super singles on the back of this thing. Put a nice harside camper not the back + plenty of storage boxes. Would be a cool, unique, mountain rig.
Mags who are sleeping in their truck/camper with the windows open during snowfall/rain
What are you doing to deflect snow from coming in? Every winter night ever, I always sleep with the windows at least cracked because of my propane heater...but when it is nuking outside, there is of course snow coming in from my screens. Anyone got any deflector suggestions? I am pretty crafty but can't think of anything off the top of my head besides building like a plastic container window thingy to create an open space...but that is absurd cause this is my daily driver which would extend my camper shell another 6'' at least?
Luckily I have a van with windows that pop out. And am not ballsy enough to sleep with my propane on (I just turn it off and get in a 0 degree bag with a bottle of whiskey, turn it on in morning.)
What about some pop up/down reflectors that mount on the outside of your camper shell. Just some folding shelf hinges (ideally to something that locks at 45-degrees) and a piece of plexiglass.
This is the stuff snowmobiles use to cover the holes in their hoods, air can pass right through, snow and (to an extent) water cannot.

On the pricey side but replace your pre-existing screen with this stuff, and no fab work required.
Anyone mod a van like this out for a camper?

That would be a nice base rig! I know guys who use those for work vans in the mountains all the time and say they are great in the snow. Only limit is clearance but that is only an issue if you go offroading. If you can afford it, that would be a sweet ride! I think they are some posts about these vans in this thread.
Yeah definitely a little more than I was wanting to spend. Doubt they do too great on gas either.
I'm building on that platform as we speak. Will update with pics once I've made more meaningful progress, but so far I've finished the insulation, roof vent, subfloor, and some other odds and ends. Hoping to start wiring this weekend.
Best MPG for me was ~20-21 driving it to CO from NM after purchase. It was pretty solidly 18.5 freeway once I removed the lower air dam from the front bumper. I recently upsized to 265/75/16 tires and expect a further drop, but I've had my dash off for a month for install stuff and haven't been able to use the trip comp.
Cool, sounds promising actually, I thought I saw they got around 10-12 for some reason. Is yours a V8? I would be interested to see your layout.
No affiliation but the po$$ibilities are endle$$ with this flatbed... http://www.commercialtrucktrader.com...l80--119082695
i've been eyeing this. pop top is nice head space and easy to put a second bed up there for guests! plus already has a bunch of desirable upgrades.

^hey cool. thanks for that link. and since i'm on a long conf call i found this insulated promaster that would be a pretty easy job to finish the way you wanted it. higher miles, but BIG, and from 2014.
