    Maggots story in SKIING Magazine

    Hello Maggots,

my name is Rob Story, and I'm a writer for SKIING Magazine. I was an editor/writer at POWDER for years, and still write for them sometimes, as well as Backcountry and Outside. Anyway, I want to describe the Maggot phenomenon in SKIING.

Could you answer a few questions?
    1. How many maggots are there? Do you have a geographical concentration (like the West, etc.)
    2. How'd the name maggots originate? Did it have anything to do with Powder Magazine?
    3. Is it true you were insulted/bothered by Powdermag.com and moved to TGR afterward? What did Powdermag.com do wrong?
    4. What percentage or number of other maggots have you actually met face to face?
    5. Do you ever ski with someone you've only met online? What's that like?
    6. How would you describe the ski ability of the average maggot?
    7. Do you get a sense that online forums like this one keep skiing alive 12 mos of the year? Is that good or bad?
    8. What's the coolest advice/link/etc. ever shared by maggots?
    9. How have your fellow maggots improved skiing for you?
    10. How much more do you trust fellow maggots' opinions on gear than stuff you read in a magazine, etc?

All answers comments and even complaints are welcome.

    Cheers,
    Rob Story

This could help answer some of those questions:

    Meet The Minions

    Other answers:
    1) Lots (no idea really)
    5) Yes. I've never had anything but good experiences as everyone shares a pretty solid group of common interests.
    10) Quite a bit as you're likely to get opinions from many angles here... There's definitely a herd mentality in dislike of some things but for the most part I've been very pleased with the items I've purchased at the advice of the forum.

Hope that helps get you started

Isn't the answer to most serious questions here either "boobs" or "poop?"

I have skiied before with someone I only met online (otherwise known as "my crazy internet friends") and it was...how can I say this properly...fun!

    Boobs.

    Poop.

I've been shown incredible hospitality and goodwill as a relative JONG here. I've bought gear at incredible prices and been given advice and counsel on a number of important issues unanswerable elsewhere.

I got a great day of insider skiing at Alta last winter form a pair of mags who took their day of skiing to show me and my lovely wife around their home area, and was offered another day with a different mag but the wires got crossed and it didn't happen. Hope to repeat (the actual meeting) this season and possibly meet some other utards.

Attended a longboard day and was warmly welcomed by perfect strangers. Of course, they did abscond with my Reisling bottle.

Met up with a mag who took me mountain biking, and hope to ski with more mags this season.

The skill level I've encountered is quite high, and my 13 yr. old son teases me about my 'online buddies'.

I hope I've managed to contribute a thing or two (at most) but it would be difficult to ever catch up compared to what I've been offered. Good bunch of knuckleheads here.

Could you answer a few questions?
    1. How many maggots are there? Do you have a geographical concentration (like the West, etc.) Maggots multiply like flies on shit...there are many.

    2. How'd the name maggots originate? Did it have anything to do with Powder Magazine? Ding, ding....give the man a kewpie doll!!!!

    3. Is it true you were insulted/bothered by Powdermag.com and moved to TGR afterward? What did Powdermag.com do wrong?
It banned der poopenhausen during staff lunch breaks. We left in support of our fellow sodomites

    4. What percentage or number of other maggots have you actually met face to face?

Maggots don't meet face to face, they rub butts

    5. Do you ever ski with someone you've only met online? What's that like?

Well, you slide on snow, due to gravity. It is gnar.

    6. How would you describe the ski ability of the average maggot?

9.5 out of 10 on the extremeo dude scale. Except for that guy str8line...he's a wuss who wears neon fartbags and picks up toothless Hungarian hookers.

    7. Do you get a sense that online forums like this one keep skiing alive 12 mos of the year? Is that good or bad?

Keeps me from working. That answer your question?

    8. What's the coolest advice/link/etc. ever shared by maggots?

There is some excellent redhead porn posted. https://www.tetongravity.com/forums/s...ad.php?t=90777

    9. How have your fellow maggots improved skiing for you?

At the end of a ski day, we all get in a circle, hold hands and sing Kumbaya. That gives me wood.

    10. How much more do you trust fellow maggots' opinions on gear than stuff you read in a magazine, etc?

    Tech Talk, bitch!!!!

so you want to write about the maggots. get ready for your due.

Maybe you don't remember that Powder erased two years worth of the previous version of this forum. The maggots will never forget!

If you do make it thought all of the hammering from this forum please write about some of the many accomplishments this group of crazy internet skiers has made.

    Like

sending mad cash to a Maggot in his time of need (shoesmith)
A internet Ski company (PM Gear)
Support for a Mag that was diagnosed and then succumbed to cancer (Plakespear)

and like the credit reel of any decent ski movie "and many more"

Could you answer a few questions?
    1. How many maggots are there? Do you have a geographical concentration (like the West, etc.)
There are 18 maggots. The rest are aliases.

    2. How'd the name maggots originate? Did it have anything to do with Powder Magazine?
All 18 of us are hudge fans of MAGnum P.I. It's the steezy stache.

    3. Is it true you were insulted/bothered by Powdermag.com and moved to TGR afterward? What did Powdermag.com do wrong?
It's a myth. The truth is that we were insulted/bothered by Harald Harb at realskiers.com, and so moved to TGR.

    4. What percentage or number of other maggots have you actually met face to face?
All 18 of us get together regularly for World of Warcraft.

    5. Do you ever ski with someone you've only met online? What's that like?
If "ski" is a euphemism for "sleep," then yes. It's expensive. Leave the $500 on the dresser, and get 'er done.

    6. How would you describe the ski ability of the average maggot?
See #5. All 18 of us are hung like horses.

    7. Do you get a sense that online forums like this one keep skiing alive 12 mos of the year? Is that good or bad?
See #5. The online escort industry doesn't need us.

    8. What's the coolest advice/link/etc. ever shared by maggots?
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vp-is6S_b_g

    9. How have your fellow maggots improved skiing for you?
See #5. This one time, in band camp, iceman loaned me $500 for a Thai hooker...

    10. How much more do you trust fellow maggots' opinions on gear than stuff you read in a magazine, etc?
Lots. Without iceman, we would never have learned the joys of the LS9000.

All answers comments and even complaints are welcome.

    Cheers,

    1) roughly 15,200
    2) it stemmed from an earlier acronym Mostly Assured Gurus
    3) the rumours of that are greatly exaggerated, it was more bribery by TGR than anything else

the same thing was said when Splat ran his Powder article about the first annual Summit in 2002.

(might want to dig that article up Rob for a reference and more background)

Could you answer a few questions?
    1. How many maggots are there? Do you have a geographical concentration (like the West, etc.)

Oodles - mostly on the Coasts and in the Rockies, but we have active participants from around the globe, including South America, OZ/NZ, Japan, and both Eastern and Western Europe. None in Africa as far as I know, but that may change.

    2. How'd the name maggots originate? Did it have anything to do with Powder Magazine? Yes.
    3. Is it true you were insulted/bothered by Powdermag.com and moved to TGR afterward? What did Powdermag.com do wrong? Not by Powmag.com in general, just some douchebag webguy they hired who chucked out most of the history (including Trip Reports w/pix) to "save space." His name was Daniel and he's a marked man.
    4. What percentage or number of other maggots have you actually met face to face? Dunno the percentage, but I have met probably 50 maggots in person over the years, some of whom are now amongst my closest friends.
    5. Do you ever ski with someone you've only met online? What's that like? Fun, but all skiing is fun. I have yet to meet a maggot I dislike.
    6. How would you describe the ski ability of the average maggot? Better than average but I get the sense that many talk a good game too.
    7. Do you get a sense that online forums like this one keep skiing alive 12 mos of the year? Is that good or bad? Works for me... gotta feed the monkey somehow.
    8. What's the coolest advice/link/etc. ever shared by maggots? Forgot who wrote it, but probably "Don't use a hammer - just slit its throat." Unfortunately for all involved it came too late.
    9. How have your fellow maggots improved skiing for you? Sure - they push me to do things I'd normally cheese out of.
    10. How much more do you trust fellow maggots' opinions on gear than stuff you read in a magazine, etc? Completely. Magazine reviewers are people I don't know, but if someone here whose ability I do know gives me feedback on gear then I trust their opinion - and their motivation, since none get paid for their opinion here.

All answers comments and even complaints are welcome.

    Cheers,
    Rob Story

    1) collection of 10-20 in the banff/caglary area.
    2) you are a rocket surgeon my friend.
    3) thanks for bringing up such painful childhood memories again. Ya the great migration on 2003?
    4) well don't know how many we are so a % is kind of hard. I've skied with 10-20 of them I think. Some I new before, some for skiing. I think if you see a maggot with CMH volkl explosives I sold them that ski.
    5) just like skiing with someone who you just meet on the chairlift I guess.
    6) a lot higher, or a lot lower then they think they are. The good are great, and the bad are in Michigan
    7) they sure do keep it alive year round. and that is good. Also have flyfishing, kayaking, music and some other forums too.
    8) NSFW threads, and some gear modification threads. Some of the TR are great too
    9) They buy my gear, so I can afford to ski. Going on a straight line camp this winter too.
    10) Trust that I will get a more varied opinion and can ask questions that are a little more varied. How to I add dynafit plugs to an alpine boot, or Volkl sanouk vs 193 EHP. Or the big questions in life like "What to do on a date with a onearmed chick", or someone in a pantsuit.

    1. How many maggots are there? Do you have a geographical concentration (like the West, etc.)

I have no idea what the actual number is and though it seems like many are concentrated in the western US, there are a lot of Midwest and East Coasters.
    2. How'd the name maggots originate? Did it have anything to do with Powder Magazine?
From What I understand you've got it right, I wasn't around then, I was busy healing from a little accident and wasn't skiing too much for a couple years
    3. Is it true you were insulted/bothered by Powdermag.com and moved to TGR afterward? What did Powdermag.com do wrong?
    See Above
    4. What percentage or number of other maggots have you actually met face to face?
Don't know the percentage but I've skied, fished, drank with, talked with a good number
    5. Do you ever ski with someone you've only met online? What's that like?
I got another Mag to ask my daughter if she had "Change for a Nickle" online last year, she later pointed him out, not like I would have missed the TGR sweatshirt, and ski with him every chance I get, there have been a number of others but I like that story
    6. How would you describe the ski ability of the average maggot?
Pretty decent, but there's a few who kind of scare me with their abilities, take that however you like
    7. Do you get a sense that online forums like this one keep skiing alive 12 mos of the year? Is that good or bad?
    Yes, and it's good
    8. What's the coolest advice/link/etc. ever shared by maggots?
I've gotten ski advice, car advice, rodent killing advice, trip advice, beer advice, mounting advice, hey I'm a needy little bitch arn't I.
    9. How have your fellow maggots improved skiing for you?
To some extent, I tend to go after it a little harder but then that could have something to do to regaining confidence after my accident
    10. How much more do you trust fellow maggots' opinions on gear than stuff you read in a magazine, etc?
Big time. It's always good to hear from someone that has personal experience with a product rather than a group who skis a couple runs then fills out a score card. That and I can get a gear review on a backpack, car, beer all at the same time, one stop shopping!

So there you have it. My take. What I have gained from hanging around here is amazing. I've seen the best and worst of the human spirt, little girls in Utah get a basket of presents in a hospital, shared stoke with people all over the world, more porn than one fellow should be allowed to view, gotten great advice and a last minute pep talk before a marathon, and great friendships with some pretty cool folks. As much as I'd hate to see a bunch of JONGS come snifing around here, this is a cool subject for an article.
