Rob just needs to point out that he hasn't yet been the subject of our elaborate hazing rituals.

I will crack up, however, if I'm approached by some jeans or Bogner-clad gaper who notices my Bros and asks for change.

I hear you. I responded once, but here's another. Thanks again for replying. You've all given me some cool insight, and I had a good phone confab with Splat last night, too. He had some good words and stories on maggots.

I'm not really a lurker, but when I did that Whistler story, I had no sources for discontent, and your board was way, way more informative than any other ski board. Didn't mean to portray you badly, but I honestly don't think that Whistler gondola is going to ruin anything.

The statements that I'm a writer for Skiing and a freelancer are both true. If you can't understand that, look up freelancer.

Sorry if I vanish for hours/days. My good computer crashed, and I'm working virtually on dial-up speeds on an old one.

my name is Rob Story, and I'm a writer for SKIING Magazine. I was an editor/writer at POWDER for years, and still write for them sometimes, as well as Backcountry and Outside. Anyway, I want to describe the Maggot phenomenon in SKIING.

Could you answer a few questions?
    1. How many maggots are there? Do you have a geographical concentration (like the West, etc.)
    2. How'd the name maggots originate? Did it have anything to do with Powder Magazine?
    3. Is it true you were insulted/bothered by Powdermag.com and moved to TGR afterward? What did Powdermag.com do wrong?
    4. What percentage or number of other maggots have you actually met face to face?
    5. Do you ever ski with someone you've only met online? What's that like?
    6. How would you describe the ski ability of the average maggot?
    7. Do you get a sense that online forums like this one keep skiing alive 12 mos of the year? Is that good or bad?
    8. What's the coolest advice/link/etc. ever shared by maggots?
    9. How have your fellow maggots improved skiing for you?
    10. How much more do you trust fellow maggots' opinions on gear than stuff you read in a magazine, etc?

All answers comments and even complaints are welcome.

    Cheers,
    Rob Story

I read that article and I didn't think it was derogatory. Given the maggot quotes chosen, it seemed pretty representative.

Contact a few folks in WA, UT, WY,CA, CO, BC, etc and stop in; we will provide you a place to stay, feed you, get you drunk, hook you up with skis/passes/bikes, etc.., show you our mountains and trails, share our secret stashes with you, fix your skis/bikes, laugh with you, laugh at you, cry with you, help you get a job, help you find a house, sell you a house, build you a house, introduce you to your future ex-wife, cook you bacon, recommend a good dentist, show you where to "really" go.

All of this will be done in faith that you are one of us and would do the same for us on your terrain, at your home.

Once you visit, you will always have a skiing/riding buddy that you could contact at any time, be it to sharlp or just crash for a night as you drive to Mexico. We don't ask for anything in return but will drink all the beer you leave behind, smoke what you are holding, ask for naked pictures of your sister.

Good luck with the article, we'll be watching.

I laughed, I cried, I nearly got sick.
    Beautifully played, Mr. Altagirl.

Why do the maggots need Rob's story out there?
If it weren't for serendipity, there'd be no dipity at all

Lots of people seem worried about some infiltration of this place by jongs and whatnot....

But what no one has mentioned yet is that perhaps as a result of the article there would also be some cool new members as well who would post up TR's, photos, humor, etc. What would be bad about that?

And most of those worriers seem to have signed on within the last two or three years. Weird.

    Thumbs up

Rob, I love you're enthusiasm, but we already made a video about the maggots a few years ago.

Here is a little clip of it. Enjoy! nsfw

That's because those who've been around longer have already seen the place change and stuck around anyway, while those who haven't seen and survived the same degree of change lack that experience. Par for the course.

Hi Rob! I would like to formally invite you to construct and publish your article about our fun-loving community at http://forums.alpinezone.com. Unlike the TGR "maggots", our membership bonds at a higher level and we are much more savvy and disciplined than the juvenile and somewhat profane wannabes you will encounter here. We congregate and ski together in addition to discussing in our forum the true "gnar" of American skiing, which is the northeast. Real skiers know that best in the land come from our area! If TGR is the "Pabst Blue Ribbon" of ski forums, we would be the "Guinness Stout". C'mon over and meet our crew Rob, our "Story" needs to be told!
