Thumbs up TR: Berthoud Pass, 10/18/07 (first post)

I’ve been lurking for a while, and never bothered to register until I had something worth posting.

With some reports of snow falling yesterday and last night, I decided to go on a solo mission and investigate today. Last night I mixed myself a stiff White Russian and went to bed by 11 with my alarm set for 4am. I managed to get out of bed by 4:30, and was on the way out of Boulder by 5.

As soon as I turned onto US 40 in Empire, I encountered moderate snowfall, with enough accumulation on the road to keep me alert. I followed a snow plow up to the top of the pass.

By the time I got my boots and skins on, it was light enough to leave the headlamp in the car. I skinned up to the treeline on the east side of the road.
I found 4-8” of powder on top of a supportive crust—more in pockets on the leeward side of trees. Coverage was good; no rocks or stumps. Because of the low angle of the slope and the lack of wax on my skis, a managed half a dozen half-assed turns and basically pointed it back to the parking lot. Was nearly 3 hours driving and a half-hour skin worth it? Definitely. Those were my first ever October turns.

And I made it to class at 9.

First light starting out (six second exposure)

    The reward

My tracks with amazing changing light and clouds. The following pictures were all taken within about 2 minutes of each other.

Someone else's tracks on the other side of the road. Anyone want to claim these?

On the way back down highway 40

An hour later, coming back into Boulder

    I love Colorado.

So I guess you can edit thread titles.

But only inside the thread title. Fuck. Jong away.

Bwa! Maybe the re-statement of the title inside the thread's first post, but not the one that shows up in the main Ski/Snowboard Forum view with the list of threads.

Anyway, nice work. I'm really just jealous.

Strong first post, nice work. I lived in Boulder for 9 years before leaving and the shot of the Flatirons still puts a smile on my face. Thanks.

I'd award +1 for the right way to start
but -1 for the date malfunction
So I guess breaking even is not too bad for a JONG.

    Nice changing color sequence.

Powder snow skiing is not fun. It’s life, fully lived, life lived in a blaze of reality. What we experience in powder is the original human self, which lies deeply inside each of us, still undamaged in spite of what our present culture tries to do to us. Once experienced, this kind of living is recognized as the only way to live–fully aware of the earth and the sky and the gods and you, the mortal, playing among them. Dolores LaChapelle

You had me at "White Russian". If you make it to the north half of the "Front Range", or ever need to improve a ride over Berthoud, Please let me know.
