Sure. But the crock is always good for keeping and serving chili and stuff like that. Instant pot is more of a way to cook, not something you would serve food out of although maybe you can. The instruction book and cook book it comes with is pretty thick and haven't read a lick of it.

If you already have a slow cooker or a pressure cooker, though, you may just want to buy the other. They're both amazingly useful, but very different - actually, kind of the opposite of each other.

We probably should have a pressure cooker thread here. That thing is fucking magic. Real-deal chili verde in 30 minutes, homemade enchilada sauce (including perfectly cooked chicken) in 15 minutes, risotto in 8 minutes... definitely a weeknight miracle machine. I have a stovetop pressure cooker (not an electric one) that cost I think $50 and is amazing.

Three pounds of bone-in pork shoulder seasoned with garlic powder, salt, pepper, smoked paprika and browned on all sides, then put in the pot on a bed of onions and garlic with a half a can of Rainier and some homemade salsa.

Fell off the bone six hours in but not quite ready to be forked. Perhaps a bit of a broil to get some crispy bits when it's all said and done. Certainly smells good!

Do not, I repeat, do not try to make French onion soup in your crock pot. Slow cooking a few pounds of onions permeates everything in your house.

Put the crock pot on at 7 pm with the onions, woke up at 3am with burning eyes in my bedroom behind closed doors. Took days to air out.

    Good soup though.

    Good info dudes. Thanks.

I suppose with enough duct tape anything can become a pressure cooker.

It's not generating the pressure that's the problem. It's releasing it!

Quick search and instant pot does it too.

Right. Because Instant Pot is, among other things, a pressure cooker.

Cannot believe this thread has been stagnant for so long.

Just blew out my knee so will be going deep on the cooking front.
    Currently making a Cochinita pibil.
Bunch of crazy seasonings - making it with wild boar - see fall days afield thread.

Oh, I disagree on the french onion soup - caramelize the onions in a covered pot - then transfer to crock pot = no worries,
I use caribou stock for excellent flavor.

    Good stuff everyone.

Wanted to add that last fall I found the slo cooker method to make black garlic.

I also use an external thermostat as the low temp setting of 200F was too high. 170F is just right and it still takes about 6 days to finish but the results are great and it’s way less that the 1-2 months of other methods.

It will be smelly and I used an old bath towel over the crock pot to stifle the worst of it.

    Keep on slo cooking.

I found some beautiful pork chops at Costco for $2.90 a lbs.

I do plan to try them sous vide, a few may make it on to the grill.
