Subaru Outback Price Difference throughout US?
So I'm in the market for a new used car and it looks like the Outback is coming up as the car that meets almost all of my demands. Unfortunately, everyone and their mom in Seattle drives one or wants one and it seems to have driven the prices up astronomically. So...I'm starting to look elsewhere in the US. If I could get a good deal, I'd be into flying there picking it up and making a road trip back to Seattle with the new ride.
So the questions are:
Does this work, is there much of a price difference?
Any suggestions on where to get one, 10K would be great.
Any drawbacks to this plan?
Other info that I haven't thought of?
Gracias por la info.

Great recommendation Telenater, I brought my car with me from NY and that thing was a rust bucket, Cars on the west definitely tend to last a lot longer.

I think in places where they're less popular the prices will be lower, but the selection will be smaller as well. I'd look at craigslist in cities where there's not much snow (therefore no salt and not high demand). Phoenix, Vegas, and anywhere in TX come to mind. Just be prepared to keep looking for awhile to find just the right ride.

try texas. not only is their market soft for AWD vehicles, but texans generally hate subaru's.
CO is not your place to buy. especially not a subaru dealer. those guys pay the moon for subies."The trouble with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money" --Margaret Thatcher

A lot of retired people drive Outbacks around here (Southern California). The few Subaru dealerships seem to have a fair amount of used Outbacks and Foresters when I drive by (in addition to a million WRXs). I'm sure the resale on them is less here than in Seattle, and, given who's driving them and the location, they're likely in good shape.

Try using eBay. Surprisingly dealer prices on eBay tend to be pretty low and any reputable dealer with have a high volume of sales with lots of positive feedback.
I bought a car on eBay this summer and I ended getting it about $2500 under blue book. Even with a $300 plane ticket and $150 in fuel I still paid less than a dealer in Denver would've charged me for the same vehicle.

autotrader.com Look up a zip code in another state and then search a 500 mile rdisu. There are 693 used Outbacks priced from $3,900 (1997) - $31,485 (2007) within a 500 mile radius of my SoCal zip code. You can also search "Any distance". There are 6,371 used Outbacks for sale.

Nice, ebay and auto trader are good suggestions. I went to a dealer this week and they said that they're flying out the door right now.

Also try crazedlist to check CL listing in multiple locations for same item... (unless you run ie in which case its not as useful)

Don't come to Boulder/Denver. I am looking for a Suby as well, and it seems like the price of these things is inflated out the ass here.

There seem to be a ton of these here in Reno. 2 large local dealers, lots of standing inventory.
I looked at buying a new one last year; the dealerships negotiate down to invoice pricing fast, then allow rebates/incentives/etc. to be stacked easily. I don't really know if the deals on used ones are as easy to find as on the new ones though.
