I was just thinking today how I miss albums.
#1 reason? B Side.
You buy a new album and the thrill of the first song grabs you.
Second song is usually pretty good.
At the end of side A, you get the thrill of a whole new Side B.
Artists specifically saved a good song for that first track of the B side.
Plus it was made all that better by the pause created by the need to flip the disc.
CD's killed all that.
And I miss it.
good on ya phish for going retro. . .

Just keep checking thrift stores, some of them are goldmines for good old vinyl. A lot of times I come out with a bunch more than i really want/need just based on the price and the rarity. Records are great

Records is the way to go. There's an incredibly amount of jazz that never made it to any other media besides vinyl. That's reason enough.

I've scored a lot of great vinyl off of eBay too. Especially when you search for lots.

Physical audio always beats the digital. Even the Kid A and Ok Computer I have on 8" sound better than the cd and they were made for digital. If I could carry one around, or somehow installed one in a car(I think they did that on pimp my ride, in the glove compartment) Id definetly do it.

You can find good stuff at the Twist & Shout and Wax Trax down in Denver. My turntable has been sitting unused since I switched from my old preamp with built in phono to my new integrated amp without. I keep buying ski gear instead of a phono preamp. doh.

agreed on the radiohead.
actually, back in the 60s, they did make an "in-dash" record player (for 45s). it employed a crazy VTF which would effectively destroy the record after one play.
here's a photo of my current vinyl rig:
fully agree with nick p -- even for the jazz that's been released on CD, but of the stuff up to and including the early- to mid-60s was meant to be heard in mono.
pick up any of these and thank me later. ;-) (yes, photos of actual album covers...)

one of the saddest days of my life was in college when i discovered that some bonehead drunk friend of my roommate had sat a beer on my 200+ record collection, spilled it, and abandoned it there. it must have been a week before i discovered it, by then the beer had soaked thru all the album covers by osmosis and mold had begun to grow. every single album cover ruined. i salvaged the records themselves but was so hearbroken about it i later just gave them away.
i have a friend now that had an impressive collection of 60s and 70s rock albums complete with tube amplifier and some damn impressive speakers. the presence that it gives it astounding. we were listening to beck, bogart, and appice the other day and i actually asked to turn it up during a drum solo and that never happens with drum solos.

I've got a pile of them that came to me when someone was offloading their junk. They are in various states of condition, some double albums are missing a disc, but there are duplicates of some of the albums too:
Bruce Springsteen The River
Ted Nugent Free for all
Pete Townshend Empty Glass
Joan Baez Any Day Now which is all Bob Dylan songs, and Volume Two
Linda Ronstadt Retrospective I've got two of 'em, one missing a disc
Bob Dylan Greatest Hits and Greatest Hits Vol.II two of each, but one of the Vol. IIs is missing a disc
Boston Boston
Harry Nilsson A Little Touch Of Schmilsson In The Night
Super Tramp Even In The Quietest Moments and Famous Last Words
Derek And The Dominos Layla
Yes Relayer
Eurythmics Touch
You can have all of them for shipping and a four pack of Old Rasputin.

I think I heard Love Over Gold by Dire Straits was their last record that was analog through the whole process to the final product. I have it on vinyl in Norway and remember it being great that way.

I own 1000ish vinyl records. No way I'd part with them, listen to them all the time.
I transfered many of them to my iPod using Final Vinyl. But this was years ago - does Final Vinyl still exist? It was very easy, just had to stay on top of it in case of a skip, and to change sides..
