First ride of the year. A bit muddy but trails around PDX hold up pretty well in the wet.

The inversion had relaxed a bit by afternoon, but it was something in the morning.

Probably looks harder than it is. The hardest part is not letting your hands blow off the grips when you hit the compression at the bottom.

That drop pic belongs in the “aches and pains after 45” thread.

My boy has gone from unable to figure out a Strider to pedaling since Christmas. Now I gotta convince him to cover the brake, and practice controlled stops, because right now his stopping technique seems to be "Deathgrip and count on Daddy to catch me." He's got my ginormous head that clearly doesn't fit his kid's helmet, so I've since splurged on a fancy full face that cost nearly as much as the fancy bike.

Hands 'covering' brakes is tough, especially with small hands. My daughter is 8 and still has issues from time to time.

Very rad seeing kids pick this stuff up in epiphany type moments.

Full face is a good call. I was really glad my kid had one a few times at that age. If you want some more protection I have one of these in size S and excellent condition collecting dust: https://www.motosport.com/product/?c...00FB-X001-Y001

Tried to sell it a while back and there was no interest. Yours (or anyone here) for shipping.

Thanks, I'll keep it in mind. What age did that correspond to? He's 4 now.

For now, aside from head and hands, I'm trying to go light on the protection, since usually we're spending equal or greater time on the slide or swing at the park as on the bike, and it's a pain to apply all the bubble wrap. I've got a set of knee pads for him but was holding off on introducing those until he was able to go faster than I can run alongside.

New bike day for my son last week. He's 4.5 and upgrading from a 14in Prevelo Zulu One which was getting pretty small for him to a Woom Off 4. It's his first bike with gears and he's loving it, even though he can't actually shift them as the throws are too long for his little hands. I shift them before starting up/down. Overall, I'm really impressed with the Woom. It's extremely light (17.5lbs) for its size/price. I loved the Prevelo as well, but thought it was probably a bit overbuilt for a 14 in bike. The Woom is much bigger but only 3 lbs heavier.

Jumping in on the kids protection discussion above: My son rides with a full face, gloves, and longish elbow/knee pads. The combo really helps his confidence and ensures that small crashes don't become day destroyers.

It fit him from about 5 until 8-9 and he's a pretty small kid.

It’s been hammering but I’ve only got the M-F pass. Gravel on the weekends.
