I organized another trip up to Downieville. In prior years, mid-October is perfect as the temps cool down a bit and there's usually been the first rain or two to tack down the dust. No luck on moisture this year, but temps were milder than the summer and the weather was beautiful. First day we went out on Gold Valley, then biked/hiked up to the top of Big Boulder. Second day, one of the guys joined us with a couple of his teenage boys, so we initiated them with a 7am trip up to the fire lookout tower (elev. 8500 ft). They had a blast though, and every trail we did on the way down they liked even more than the last.
Playing around on the Gold Valley slab
Finally at the top of Big Boulder
Good thing I had Double Downs.
The kids were troopers going up to the tower, and celebrated in proper kid fashion by peeing off the tower.
