Rode Palm Canyon on Saturday. The weather forecast must have scared a lot of people off as a lot didn't show up for the shuttle. 38* and some light mist up top but it always warms up quickly soon as you drop down. Aside from some mud up top this is as close to perfect conditions as you'll ever see for this ride. The only disappointment was snow capped peaks were hidden by clouds most of the day, though they started to make an appearance near the end of the ride.

You might notice somewhat of a theme in the photos

There's a new Maggot Photo Contest up in the Photo/Video forum that I think a lot of you could participate in. Some of the more recent photos would be within the timeframe.

I seldom do organized, paid events. I signed up for one this weekend called Redlands strada rossa. It's more of a gravel grinder but has some singletrack I wanted to check out, and they got permission to ride up the Seven Oaks dam which is usually closed to public access. 10 day forecast was clear when I signed up, then promptly changed to show rain on the day of the event. First a little rain, then deteriorated to show "periods of heavy rain". There's no way I'm going to ride 90 miles in the rain but figured I'd change to the 60 mile route and cut out more if needed. It isn't a race so you can skip parts of the route if you want. I asked an organizer if there were any areas of death mud to avoid. Was told no, the trails will be fine except for some puddles.

Of course I had to go out and find some nasty mud. I rode the first part of the 90 mile route. The road was fine the first couple miles but when it turned uphill the dirt must have changed. Had to get off and push. With no warning the mud started sticking and it was already too late. Fuuuuuuuuuuck! Drivetrain already coated in sloppy nasty mud and not functioning.

So do I go back, or hope the course gets better up ahead? I knew I'd have to push 4-5 miles if I turned back but there would be a stream 2-3 miles ahead if I kept going. It was a mile or so of pushing, lifting, and dragging the bike in the muck before I got to into a valley bottom. I cleaned off enough mud the wheels would spin and then I could push the bike on the grass next to the road.

Did that for 3/4 mile then was able to coast down a better road to the stream where I cleaned up. I got enough mud off that I could sort of pedal, but I'd wasted so much time already that decided to pull the plug on most of the ride. Headed to the nearest car wash for a thorough clean. It was 1pm by that point so I drove to another part of the route to ride the dam and another section of trail. The dam was very cool. It's a flood control dam not water storage so they let it fill up during big rain events and steadily discharge water after to avoid flooding below.

No one asked why my bike was so clean

Beyond the dam we kept climbing up a forest road and dropped down the other side of a ridge 5 miles back to the valley. The skies opened up again on the descent and I was soaked again so I headed back to the truck. Turns out most riders skipped large parts of the course and diverted to ride the dam. I'll hopefully go back and try the full route in a few weeks when conditions are better.

^^^Mud looks horrific, did you ask for a refund :-)

Cool you got to go up the dam, I went on a Geo Club field trip there several years ago. I seem to recall that it is the last big dam built in the USA. Crazy how full it is in your photo, but still looks under half full? I think it is designed to protect LA/OC for something as large as the Big Bear dam failing and a full Big Bear lake flood coming in.

It was a charity event so no plans to request a refund. Aside from the dam the route is open any time so I can still take advantage and get my $$ worth.

Sign at the bottom said the dam was dedicated in 2000. It was way less than half full. Maybe 1/4, if that even. But the locals were saying the water is now higher than it has ever been with the prior high water mark submerged. That would make sense why it is so tall if it were to protect against a Big bear dam failure.

For sure. Just replaced the whole drivetrain and rotors, replaced seals on rear shock and sent fork in for rebuild. Had been 2 yrs since I bought it and it was a year old then, so got some good miles out of it

I've been going out to the desert a lot lately to explore and check out the flowers. Tonight's ride confirmed that the bloom is better right here in San diego...
