Rode a big one on Labor Day. Hotel Draw to Durango on the CT. Unfortunately it was the smokiest day of the year we’ve had here (feeling fortunate but also thank you/fuck you gender reveal party), so the views were limited, but kinda spooky and dramatic.
First three are the fun machine and the faces I make while riding it on amazing shit. Last shot shows Christopher3000 riding towards penultimate climb of the day on Kennebec Pass (the saddle dead center on the horizon).

There I am, riding down the trail, finishing a fast and flowy section, and BOOM - big ass bear. I spooked him - he was about 50 yards in front of me - big fucker (photo doesn't do him justice) and off he goes running out of view. Turns out he ran up this tree, but I didn't know this right away.

At the same time, I see a biker approaching on that fire road from the opposite direction - first other rider we'd seen in 25 miles. I started yelling at him like a lunatic - he's riding toward where I just saw the bear.

"BEAR BEAR BEAR BEAR!!!" I'm yelling at him like a lunatic - he's pedaling along all mellow - seems he can't hear me. I think "great, this dolt has earbuds in, can't hear me, and is about to piss off a freaked-out bear. just fucking awesome."

"HEEYYYYY, there's a BEAR right THERE!!!" Finally, he yells back (about 75 yards away) "what's that? My hearing sucks."

"THERE'S A HUGE BEAR ABOUT 15 YARDS IN FRONT OF YOU." "Ohhhhh....."

I ride up slowly to where I saw the bear disappear. Turns out he scampered up that tree quicker than a raccoon - that's why this guy didn't seem him at first. I can now see the guy stopped, and we both start laughing when we see the bear. The bear is freaked - probably saying to himself, "what the fuck are those mechanical horses with humans on them that sound like an angry beehive?? I'm OUT."

After a minute or so, guy says, "I'm going." He was practically giggling as he rode under the bear. Sorry, evdog, but alas there was no poo flinging.

We walked around, giving Yogi a wide berth. Too funny.

Not sure where this should go, but it's cool enough to post: https://www.instagram.com/p/CE9xWJPDgt9/

Even with some fish eye tiltery it's pretty rad.

Finally made it up to the Centennials for a section of the CDT. Big country, very dry but no smoke or fire.

Just typical, you climb a tree to have a pee, and someone rides by.

Before/after smoky Pass rides: less smoky this week than two weeks ago. Hope it stays like this for a while, but seems unlikely.
