A local classic backcountry trail that seemed insurmountably destroyed just a year ago has risen from the ashes. That is, if you like "raw" trail.

Got out to a lesser-ridden classic this weekend. The climb was absolutely brutal, but the 3mi 2200ft fast rocky descent made it worth the effort.

Ms Boissal and I just got back from our annual birthday trip, four days on the bike with a climbing day thrown in for variety. I had asked on here about trail options in Lander since the climbing up there is world-class. Apparently there's still too much snow to hit a lot of the good stuff so we decided to head South instead. I can't deal with the Moab scene any longer, St George is already an inferno, and Gooseberry is on its way there unless you get up early. We decided to try higher elevation stuff around Cedar City then hop over to Panguitch/Bryce area.

Day 1 was a short one as we left SLC pretty late. We checked out the Three Peak trail system outside of Enoch/Cedar City. Huge new parking lot at the trailhead, bathrooms, tools/pumps available for use, well signed dedicated bike trails criss-crossing the existing ATV network, lots of wooden features and technical sections on coarse granite, scenic, great BLM camping, things were starting well:



We drove 20 minutes to Cedar City on Day 2. I had read good things about the Iron Hills trail network and it delivered. Well build directional trails, awesome terrain, nobody around. It's literally 15 seconds off the freeway, it would make a perfect stretch-the-legs stop if you're cruising up or down I-15. Talked to a local who told me about the new trails going in and being planned, the place is growing fast! Avoid the C trail if you go there, it sucks hairy balls. Ms B took a nap while I gained a whole bunch of vert on a steep loose switcbacky shit trail then cooked my breaks back down...









Day 3 was a climbing and commuting day, making our way up Cedar Canyon to the Panguitch/Bryce area. The road over Cedar Breaks / Brian Head just opened and the snowpack is still fat.







I doubt anyone's riding any of the Brian Head trails for another month or so. Maybe some of the stuff around Navajo Lake and the Virgin River but the snowline is around 8500' right now...

Day 4 started right from camp with the scenic Casto canyon / Loose canyon loop. The hordes of beaters on ATVs or horses I was worried about never materialized, we only saw 1 group of ATVs at the trailhead and one group on horses while we were eating lunch. The horses did some gnarly damage to a bunch of sections when they were wet, expected but disappointing...
Casto is an ATV trail that rides like a single track, in and out of the wash 50 times in a row. Great for drivetrains. At least the scenery is out of this world.





I abandoned Ms B under a tree to go on a longer climbing loop up Fremont canyon. Dirt road grinding leads out of the red rock and into the land of sage brush and obligatory bike poses:





Down the Cassidy trail where most of the horse damage was. Several viewpoints overlook Casto and Loose canyons, the scenery does not suck. If the trails were in good shape this would be complete heaven. With the rattling and looseness is was just awesome:







Out Loose canyon which is a singletrack version of Casto.



By then we were covered in horseshit and mud and Ms B was ready for a beer and a creek to jump in...





Day 5 was our last, I wanted to check out the super classic Thunder Mountain. After getting stuck in a traffic jam of RVs and people taking pics of every piece of red rock in sight we made it to a completely packed trailhead and watched a group of 30 boy scouts take off. It took some controlled breathing on my part to not freak out. We chased them down the dirt road and passed them right before the start of the single-track. The first mile was through a prescribed burn, kinda spooky. After that it's 4 miles of rolling terrain with the occasional techy section then 3 miles of steep and sometimes exposed downhill. Not the greatest trail but again, the scenery makes up for it.
















The 5.5 miles of paved bike path to get back to the car were a lot shittier for me than for Ms B who stashed beer + chips & salsa at the trailhead and demanded I pick her up. I'm clearly not the smart one in the relationship...

Good to see nothing has changed with the Osguthorpe family...

There were 3 of them today when I rode through. One was off in the trees but the other 2 were taking turns running right up to a rider coming down then barking really aggressively before letting him get away for a few feet. They noticed my slow ass coming up, lost attention in the downhill dude, and came after me until I was well past the sheeps. They didn't seem ready to attack but I was shitting myself pretty good...

Not a remarkable photo until you hear that this is my first ride in Missoula after finally moving here from Iowa. Long-time plans to move back to my home state of Montana finally coming to fruition. Nice to new back in the mountains permanently.
