Got some riding in this past weekend. Headed up to OC. Climbed up Chiquito and descended San Juan trail. Chiquito is more of a descent but reports of downed trees and lots of poison oak left me wanting to climb it to check out conditions at a lower speed.
Lots of rock features on the trail. Most are in good shape but a couple are missing their transitions (this one is fine)
Chiquito waterfall was dry
Cool rock spine has a new challenge, the stalks growing out between the rocks is all PO
The nice part about doing the ride this way is missing all the morning traffic on San Juan. It is a shit show with shuttlers and climbers. Everyone was gone by mid afternoon when I got to it.
Ocean view including San Clemente and Catalina Islands, plus you can see the final series of switchbacks way down in the valley
Fun ride. Hopefully we can get trees and PO cleared off Chiquito as its a better ride going the other way. I cut back some PO but my little hand saw couldn't do much for the downed trees.
Had a few hours daylight left so I decided to check out Sitton Peak truck trail on the opposite ridge. Cool views over to the mountains I'd just ridden in
It was a bit brushy for a few miles
Also had some really cool sections. It's an out and back so not a great ride, but glad I checked it out.

Met up with some friends for some more raw backcountry singletrack exploration
Views were good
Singletrack was rocky. Lots of HAB, overgrowth, pokey plants, PO, and ticks.
A few nice buff sections but these were definitely the exception
Then back to the gnar.

St. George. Mellow ride with the kids, then got a lap on Barrel and another on Zen. Both really fun, but found that I lost a front brake bolt somewhere in SLC or on Barrel.
Pulled one from the rear and put it up front to finish the ride.

I keep a spare brake bolt in my tool bag. It has saved a ride before.

We lost a brake bolt on a ride in the Centennials, used a heavy duty zip tie instead. Worked pretty well, actually.

fuck that noise.

In Zion now and took the road bike out for a spin. Climbed the pass and then rode the tour bus route. Beautiful country out here. We are camping, so I suppose this is a form of social distancing...

Sunday was big ride day in Palm Springs. Start at the bottom.
Got a late start and missed the best spot for sunrise
Top of Hahn, 2k foot in
Not many flowers out but these ones are my favorite
Up Dunn Road. Dunn Road sucks. Ice cream and coke help get my legs back
Big views from up top
This trail keeps going and going....
Water flowing in the desert
Best ridge top ride in Socal to finish things off
51mi and +/- 7,300ft or so.

Big day for this early! That'd actually be a big day for me in mid season, best shape of the year... but yea.

Yup! Summer is our only non-prime riding season - shorter early/late day rides due to heat, or have to get up to elevation.
The rest of the year it is always prime somewhere nearby. Higher elevations are limited due to snow/downed trees from winter into spring. Winter is prime desert and coastal biking season.
Great unless you're a skier. But I hear flights are cheap these days....

With Taos trip canceled got out for one of my local (from my driveway) rides. Pretty soon views will disappear, but riding around here is pretty good regardless
