Wednesday Night Ride, seems like almost everywhere there’s a bike shop/club, there is also a WNR, no matter where you are, Wednesday nights are for hammering on the pedals. I’ve been switching between the gravel and road rides on Wednesday’s. Tonight was a fun, fast road session on perfect, traffic free roads. The roads around Keene/Cheshire County are wicked nice.

Sunset laps last night.
A month ago someone installed a beer exchange at the top of one climb... a cooler buried in the dirt in the shade with some insulated bags, stocked with beers. Bring one to leave, and take something else. I figured it would be empty in a week. It wasn't, but now it's full of keystone light, guinness and mostly other crap beers. The logic behind guinness is its drinkable warm I guess? Still wouldn't want one mid ride. I took the Lagunitas ipa. Cool enough to be drinkable.

Not sure how to interpret this memorial but I also saw it appear in our local paper once. RIP

Biking is just getting more and more fun
On top of a load of local riding, we've also been able to get a bit further afield over the last month or so too.
First up: opening weekend at Saalbach with my gf and her parents.
Not every trail was open due to rain and a lot of snow still at altitude, but we had a lot of fun on the Reiterkogel blue trail and - especially - the Panorama blue trail. Saalbach'S 'Joker Card' is pretty cool - you get it free if you stray in a hotel in the valley, and it allows two free uplifts per day with the bikes. So you can do a 'proper ride' to get some uphill vert, ride a trail down, then use the lifts to lap it twice more before finishing your ride.
Gf's parents both switched to ebikes over the last couple of years so we definitely had a good work-out keeping up uphill! But it's a beautiful valley, and lapping the shaped trails was really helpful for me learning to corner properly. For the most part it wasn't too busy, but there were some big family groups shredding together. And we got overtaken by 10 year senders pretty regularly 🤣

Second, a long weekend of bikes and boats in beautiful Slovenia, with some solid adventure riding - the sort of stuff I was hoping for when I bought a bike! Don't have many photos of the actual trails because I was generally to 'engaged' on the interesting bits and more concerned with trying to keep up
On the way over (from Austria) we discovered the Predil Pass is currently closed overnight due to works in the tunnel, so we had to overnight by the beautiful Lago di Predil...
First ride started with around 600m vert on a tarmac road, but in insanely quiet one - we saw one car right at the start and then no more. Then onto ((thankfully) beautiful shady forest tracks for another ~5-600 more vert:
Views from the top
Ride down was beautiful and generally not too difficult natural single track all the way to the valley - but with quite a few fallen trees and a lot of DEEP leaves on the upper part. Didn't see a single other soul, and I guess it's not ridden often! Once we got lower and the leaves disappeared the trail got a little rockier/chunkier, but IIRC I only had to 'portage' one or two obstacles.
And after a long sweaty ride there's no better way to refresh than whitewater kayaking! Especially in the emerald waters of the Soca, which is definitely one of the most beautiful rivers in Europe!
Next ride was a really backcountry epic - a lot of work to get in, but a lot of fun traversing through the forest, over a mountain and down into a different valley - linking straight into where we'd left the kayaks the day before for another river. In total a little over 1300m vert, starting on quiet tarmac roads, then gravel forest tracks, then along a plateaux - then it got interesting. Traversing through the forest was a mix of rideable trails through deep leaves:
Interspersed with portages over mini-canyons and landslides - complete with the occasional boulder tumbling down from overhead... Slope to the left is a LOT steeper than it looks! #iwasscared
But fabulous views where the trees opened up:
150-200m vert hike a bike followed (photo from a break in between the two sections that made it necessary):
Before topping out on another beautiful plateaux meadow
Which a hundred or so years ago was the site (rather one of the sites) of a pretty bloody conflict between Austro-Hungarian and Italian troops
As above, I didn't get any real photos of the trail down, but it was pretty phenomenal! Loooong natural but flow single track through the forest
Then towards the bottom 1-200m vert of steep tight chunky switchbacks which were a bit too much for me (had to push the bike). And again, absolutely NO-ONE else about. Really 'wilderness' backcountry feeling.
Then straight to a re-fresh kayaking the lovely Koritnica, a tributary of the Soca with even clearer water. Actually the water colour is pretty deceptive: it looks super low, but that's actually just 'cos it's so clear. Levels were actually on the high side of medium and REALLY nice to paddle, though sometimes tough to estimate the flow in a couple of moves due to looking through it like glass...
Entrance into one of the canyons that characterise the river. Beautiful but a little unsettling, as the rock walls are incredibly undercut

And yesterday we went for a ride near Kitzbühel to try the Hahnenkamm trail - unlike the ski race, this one is an easy blue trail
You can take the lift up, but Chrisi prefers to earn her turns
~1000m vert up gets you to one of several huts.
All super quiet, as were the lifts/trails/car parks/village. Really not much tourism going on at all. Only one or two locals on the trail...
Trail is REALLY nice though. Would say generally not shaped as well as the Panorama trail at Saalbach, and less in the way of obstacles and wooden features. But also longer (a little over 7km, winding down from the mountain through the forest then meadows) and with a few sections that felt almost natural. Again, didn't stop to take photos on the fun bits but:
Then finished off the evening with an emergency malteaser mission on my new-to-me-but-really-old city bike, which coming from 800mm bars feels like a COMPLETELY different beast (I didn't own a bike for 15+ years before this summer)

Clarkleberry - great stuff! We sport climbed at Kal-Koritnica and paddled the Soca, but have wanted to get back and MTB. Our friends there got mountain bikes a few years ago and I continue to be enticed by the access and adventure (with apparently few riders) in Slovenia.

Note to self: Add Austria to the list!
GREAT photos! It makes perfect sense...until you think about it.
I suspect there's logic behind the madness, but I'm too dumb to see it.
