Did a pretty cool ride on Saturday. Our local group SDMBA is working on a huge trail project with the Forest Service, and decided they should be good neighbors and go knocking next-door, which is a huge private ranch called Rancho Guejito. It is the largest intact Mexican land grant left in California and has never before allowed public access. Somehow after talking to management a deal was reached to hold a MTB event there for around 250-300 people. The ranch even chartered a helicoptor to take people on tours. The event went well, so hopefully they will allow more events in the future. This one was well worth setting aside a day for.

There are no trails on the property so we'd be only riding fire roads. But with the chance to check this place out, no one cared.

    Entrance to the ranch proper

After a solid climb to a plateau we had a long descent

Bit more climbing. The place is summed up by green grass, boulders, and oak trees

The burned out Anderson homestead, built 1870 and intact until 2007 when a utility-caused fire raged through the area. The ranch was sure to mention that on the sign nearby.

There were great views all around including Palomar Mtn, both Black Mountains, Cuyamaca Peak, Iron Mtn and Mt Woodson.

Turning back north we rode through some cool forested canyons on the climb back to the ranch area

Checking out the remains of the Maxcy winery dating back to 1852. It was one of the first commercial wineries in California

The heli tour was cool. Did that before the ride which gave a good idea of things to look out for later

Views of the ranch. Part of the trail network we're working on is on the far high ridgeline where you can just make out a patch of trees on top, on the right

I rode that last year: fun but a bit neglected. How did he do on the waterfall section?

I think it's funny all us old dudes took similar pics on those features, you know the standard "still got it" photos but really we aren't that rad. We are like 5x older than him though, it would have been hilarious for him to roll up while we were there and hit everything in front of us. Awesome pics.

Is that right next to the big drop up top with a ride around that goes way left? I think we missed that by accident. The kids were leading and took the far left line. By the time I realized it we were too far down to hike back up.

We were pre-scoping everything that morning, but there have been some hilarious moments just like that at I Street a few times.

It is definitely Spring Break season. In the last week I went from seeing one or two other riders to dozens and all the nonsense that comes along with it. Tis the season for sitting in the middle of a rock garden with your map out and back to those riding down. At least I got to introduce a buddy who is down visiting to some trails.

Guacamole Mesa last night just before sunset. Finished riding as the sun went down on the Zion NP cliffs, finished up with a beer and pizza at River Rock Roasting. That's how you do it.

Quick trip to Moab for a bachelorette party. Just riding and hanging ar a nice condo, no weird plastic penises or useless lingerie. Still a meter of snow in my yard- nice to ride dirt and see flowers.
