With people bailing, wildfires, and some car trouble, this weekend didn't go according to plan.

Last minute change was to show maggot xyz around Idyllwild. I had to settle for a trip down to Hemet for parts while he rode, then we checked out another spot nearby.

Finally got to check out a ride I've wanted to do for ages, a moto trail in Los padres NF. Never heard of anyone riding it on MTB but looked like it could be a cool ridgetop ride. It was awesome, until it dropped into a canyon that required a long hike a bike to climb out of.

The ride started just below the distant high point on the right and dropped into the meadow below

Short HAB led to some killer ridgetop riding.

Then the trail dropped steeply into this canyon. 1200ft descent on steep loose chunder in a mile. You can make out switchbacks climbing up the far hillside.

Steep and rutted 1,000ft push back up.

This took me up to Gold Hill where it was mostly rideable for a while with a few short HABs

The sign graffiti is hilarious: "The sign is not lying" "Not worth it" "Fuck this shit" -angry motos. HAB aside, it was fun on a bike

Some go pro footage if you need something to do

First few minutes of descent was nice and buff: https://www.pinkbike.com/video/495638/
Ridgeline riding after climbing out of the meadow: https://www.pinkbike.com/video/495687/
Part of the steep descent into the canyon: https://www.pinkbike.com/video/495691/
Found this on youtube, a bit harder on a moto: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hYxybK4irD4

Self shuttle retrieval got kinda chilly. Glad I finally got to do this ride. Would probably do the ride again possibly combining some other stuff nearby into one big ride.

I should probably get one of those bikes with the bigger tires before I hurt myself

Dupont- Brevard NC- from 2 weeks ago.

    Little soggy

$18,000 of bikes in a $1500 cabin kitchen

    My ride-

I asked for a Bronson when I paid online, but they gave me the Nomad. I liked last year's Bronson better. Is the Nomad really basically the same bike now? It felt a lot squirrelier than the Bronson I rode last year. I took a rough slam- still attached to the bike- bent the shit out of the derailer. I thought for sure I was gonna owe them some $$. Tech just took it off, bent it back into shape, and said/"Your good". I love that shop- The Hub and Pisgah Tavern in Brevard.

We did a big loop from Driggs to Moab- Phil's world- Durango- Taos- Santa Fe- Abq- and one final day in Moab yesterday. On our way home to winter. Here's a few pics from yesterday, a fun loop with parts of Navajo rocks and new 7-up trails.Click image for larger version.

Ha! I rented a Nomad from the Hub in Brevard two years ago and rode the exact same trails. Wanted to go back for more in Pisgah but that was when the fires in the region were really bad and riding was just out of the question due to air quality. Really enjoyed the riding around there though, need to make it back someday. Nice to be able to breathe when you are riding a bike, unlike here at 10K'.

    Nice trip!

Does your puppies paws' hold up ok on the sandstone? One of mine does fine but the other one gets red and raw fairly quickly so has to wear boots.

Is there new stuff or re-routes on 7up? Did a loop from Navajo Rocks to Chisholm to Mag7 trails to 7up a couple years ago and 7up was mostly a disappointment because of all the jeep trail.

Agreed - 7up is terrible. I guess it's OK if you need it to get somewhere else... but I would never recommend anyone ride it just to ride it.

Ya there's a number of new loops in the upper section: Mustang, Whirlwind, and a connector to upper Getaway. All good singletrack and on Trailforks.

So far so good, Z3. He's a tough little rez dog, loves to run, as you remember from Mail Cabin.

Go forth and ride, then bring back pics

Managed to peel off for a week of driving and riding. Left VA at 3:00 on Friday afternoon, with a quick stop in WV to pick up my partner in crime. 12:30 the next day.

Started off with Joe’s and Mo Joe’s, then a quick jaunt up Sarlac to get a good look around.

Day 3. After the shuttle we only saw 5 people on Porcupine. It was eerie and awesome. Porcupine loves the taste of my derailleurs. A little trailside repair had me riding again, sans a few gears and a spoke.

My buddy’s Pike, like a wounded soldier, hung on for the finish, then blew a seal 100 yards into the road ride back to town. Budget tight and legs tired he decided to call it. Not wanting to ride Porcupine solo, I opted to start heading east in the AM. One more night in Moab.

Great trip. Turns out, if you’re strict about sleeping and have a device loaded with podcasts, the drive isn’t so bad.

Nice trip! Almost exact same itinerary as I had last month, and rode it all on a Megatrail too! But we came down Portal in the dark with an impending thunderstorm

Yeah with the studs those tires are pretty damned good on the slick stuff.

Took some kids out for a ride w/ Kedar. High 20’s, no snow, frozen trails are super smooth and fast. I think I like the frozen trails better than spring tacky dirt.

Wow some mega missions in this thread of late in both the biking and driving variety. That waist deep Creek crossing looked bruuuutal, if it was as cold down there as it was last year when I visited around this time

I can’t ride inside. I just can’t do it. So I finally broke down and purchased studs. Total game changer. I’m gonna ride a shit-ton, this winter.

Taken by my buddy (that’s me in front) in Fruita this afternoon. 18 Road was totally empty. But it’s not much fun anyways.
