Well, since the title is overrated actors, can't we include the ladyfolk? I mean Jennifer Aniston looks great, but is possibly the worst actor in Hollywood. If it was sex, she would be termed a dead lay.
OK, now the big one. John Wayne can't act. Period. And while I'm at it, neither can 99% of the acting guild who have no stage background. Even I can look genuinely morose if I had 25 fucking cracks at it.

Interesting, but sorely misguided thread.
The thing of it is that all of the names listed have ceased to be actors and are now stars. There's a HUGE difference.
DeNiro, Pacino, Cafe, even Affleck and Pitt (and the others listed) all began as actors. Their early work, before they were household names (aka "Stars") is often brilliant and actually displays solid acting chops. However, once they hit the big time they essentially began playing themselves/caricatures of themselves/caricatures of their famous characters from other movies (i.e. further capitalizing on the quirks and individuality that made them memorable to begin with; people paid money to see these "stars" act a certain way, so they are encouraged to continue acting that way to get butts in seats and sell tickets and make money).
Additionally, they've all been in the business for so long and we are saturated with their daily life exploits via the Interwebs, television, and tabloids, that they have risen above the noble profession of acting and become celebrities (aka "Stars"). Once an actor reaches the level of stardom it's inevitable that they cease to become an actor. Hence the reason you have folks like John Travolta or Bruce Willis doing small films to recapture their acting cred (remember how awesome Travolta and Willis were in Pulp Fiction? Sadly, both returned to stardom shortly thereafter and again lost their acting aura).
So, sure, some of the names listed have become overrated, but they are no longer actors (and many haven't been for a long time). They are all "Stars."
An interesting aside is that many actors who were on the verge of becoming "Stars" retreated to the stage or television (Lawrence Fishburne, Claire Dane, Julia Stiles, Billy Crudup...). Wondering if this was a conscious decision on their parts and an attempt to keep their acting purer rather than become yet another Hollywood star repeating the same character in film after film?

While this may be true, if you ask any of these "stars" what their professions are, they will bloviate on about their "craft" and how they are "actors." You see it all the time on Inside the Actor's Studio. If these folks choose to call themselves actors, then they should be evaluated based upon the standards commonly assigned to actors, not to over PR'd movie stars. I have no problem criticizing a person who may actually have acting chops, maybe as shown prior to stardom, but has decided to define their career by jumping from one profitable caricature to another.

Much truth in Dookey's above, including "misguided thread". In an attempt to improve it, how about ..... who's not over-rated, or better yet - who's managed to continue to act (and act well) in spite of achieving star status? Just to start: how about the three leads in The King's Speech (Firth, Rush and Bonham-Carter)?

Robert De Niro was born in New York City, the son of Virginia Admiral, a painter, and Robert De Niro, Sr., an abstract expressionist painter and sculptor.[1] De Niro's father was of Italian and Irish descent, and his mother was of English, German, French, and Dutch ancestry.[2][3] His Italian great-grandparents, Giovanni Di Niro (the original surname was Di Niro and not De Niro) and Angelina Mercurio, emigrated from Ferrazzano, in the province of Campobasso, Molise,[4] and his paternal grandmother, Helen O'Reilly, was the granddaughter of Edward O'Reilly, an immigrant from Ireland.[5]

Nicholas Cage is where the discussion begins and ends.

Cage has done a lot of crap, for sure, but two of his more recent efforts--Mandy and Color Out Of Space--are fantastic, if you dig gonzo horror and bugged-out sci-fi.

I like how De Niro’s mom was a “painter” but his dad was an “abstract expressionist painter” lol. Is that where you put a bubble wand of paint in front of your asshole and fart onto the canvas? Asking for a friend.

Jesse Eisenberg is the exact same person in every role he gets, and that person is annoying. I'm not sure Eisenberg is rated all that highly, but he keeps getting fairly big roles, so apparently someone thinks he's good. I disagree with that person.
And on the female front, I've never been impressed with Michelle Pfeiffer. The aging coke-whore schtick is all she's got.
That aside, I think a lot of what's discussed in here are just really uneven actors. Nic Cage being the perfect example. He's had some great roles. And some significantly less great ones where the director let him get a little too loose. Same goes for Pacino, and plenty of others.

Most overrated actor
Cage was in ‘The Rock’ and ‘Con Air’ tohse are like two of the greatest movies of all time!
How about Marlon Brando? Richard Gere? Love them but hmmm. Elvis Presley movies are sooo bad. Oh I wanna say Travolta because he has the same damn dumb ass face in every movie but I like Urban Cowboy. Member that part when he punches Wes? Remember how Wes was robbing the very place of business that let him use his camper in the parking lot?
And maybe not actor but Jimmy fucking goddamn Kimmel is not fucking funny.
Also love me some Burt Reynolds but man wasn’t he like the same character in every movie? Then again he prolly ain’t overrated, he’s just Burt Reynolds, reckon he’s OK with that. Reckon I would be too.

Yeah I know it's 16 years later but I hadn't heard the name forever so wondered what Nic Cage has been up. God damn this guy has been in a shitload of movies that I've never heard of in my life. https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000115/

The Reverend nails Nic Cage earlier, he was perfect as H.I. in Raising Arizona, and in LLL.
I’ve told this story before, but in the nineties my Native American religious studies teacher (I know, but just fuck off) said how Kevin C. screwed over some Dakota casino investment in Deadwood after Dancing with Wolves, so the local N.A. put a curse on all his movies or career after that. And decades later, without googling whatever exception to this curse-rule, I think they did a fine curse-job, right? Teacher was hilarious, one of my favorites, he eventually got booted from campus for some bullshit. Hope he cursed the fuckers that fired him.

Something has always irritated me about Christian Bale. Maybe cuz it always looks like he is trying to keep dentures in.
But damn, he goes pretty ham on his roles.
Still want to punch him in the face.
