    Nils' Maggot Friends Please Gather

The family of Nils Nissen would like to formally invite Nils' maggot friends to help celebrate his life on October 6th at 1pm at the Plum Tree in South Kortright, New York. I am planning a "Tour de Nils" bike ride to and from the service - Hawaiian shirts, TGR bike jerseys, or any other bright, loud, obnoxious jersey you own is the proper attire. The celebration will be a gathering of friends and family who wish to celebrate Nils' accomplishments, share in his stories of adventure, and reflect upon the impact that Nils has had in all our lives. Nils' Final Bash will take place later that night - a chance for maggots to celebrate Nils' loves- skiing, biking, beer, and the company of good friends. Sunday morning a breakfast of pancakes and plenty of bacon...just as Nils would want...is planned for those staying over.

Nils' upstate hometown is short on accomodations for out of town guests but Paula, Harry, and I have arranged for this already. All you need to bring is a pillow and sleeping bag if you are planning to stay over...We can put you up Friday and Saturday night. Thursday night too, if needed.

We are really looking forward to meeting those of you who have responded to the threads posted about Nils...I have had the pleasure of meeting only a handful of you.

If you intend to come, please bring your bike, a bag, and your LIVESTRONG attitude.

Email me if you need directions or just to say whether you can be there or not...or have any questions at all.

    Hope to see you soon,
    Kira

i have room for a couple more for rides up from the NY area. we're leaving in the AM and returning in the PM.

i have a thule roof rack, but only one bike attachment. if you're bringing a bike, we may be able to cram it inside, but if you have a mount that'll fit a standard thule rack, bring it along.

I am sorry I won't be able to attend. But I will be sending my strongest vibes.

I didn't know Nils was from South Kortright. I have a bit of a connection to that beautiful little town so my thoughts will be right there with you all even though I will be half a continent away. Physical distance means less when the place and the people are already a vivid part of one's consciousness. Nils and South Kortright are surely part of mine.

I boiled my thermometer, and sure enough, this spot, which purported to be two thousand feet higher than the locality of the hotel, turned out to be nine thousand feet LOWER. Thus the fact was clearly demonstrated that, ABOVE A CERTAIN POINT, THE HIGHER A POINT SEEMS TO BE, THE LOWER IT ACTUALLY IS. Our ascent itself was a great achievement, but this contribution to science was an inconceivably greater matter.

I will be there very much in spirit on October 6.

My thoughts have been so much with you and your parents, Kira.

This sounds like a fitting and loving tribute to Nils.

I can't make it but I'll do some celebrating of Nils in this thread.

I've only skied with Nils once. He came out to Utah a few years back after his first bout with cancer to ski at Alta and go heli-skiing courtesy of the maggots. Well I skied with him and with Altachic at Alta, I think the day before heliskiing. It was a typical Alta day with a small storm going on. AC and I showed him some of our favorite spots. There was a bit of pow but it wasn't epic snow. Definitely was fun skiing and good company. Later in the day we hit up the Ho and both Liz and I popped out without Nils. So we wait and wait at the base of Wildcat hoping that he'll show up. Never does. So Liz waits at the bottom and I take another run through the Ho hoping that I don't run into him hurt or down a tree well or something. Didn't see a sign of him at all. So we wait a little longer at the base and decide we must have missed him and he must be up on the mtn somewhere skiing. We take a lap and when we get to the bottom we see Nils coming up from the parking lot. Apparently, he just kept traversing out not realizing that he'd end up at Snowbird and ended up hitching back to Alta. Liz and I were a bit relieved as we didn't want a guy who had just gone through so much to miss out on heliskiing. The next day I went to class and Nils and Liz ripped up the Wasatch. I'm proud to be associated with the people who gave them that opportunity. I know that just from that day that Nils was a genuine person and really cared about those around him. I'll always have fond memories of my day skiing with him. RIP Plake and save some pow for the rest of us.

Unfortunately Bluebird and I have will be out of town that weekend. It saddens me to say, but we cannot attend.

I got to spend time with Nils, the last week he was here so I will cherish those moments, and reflect on them on October 6th. We will be there in spirit.

And we are going raise ALL HOLY HELL in Nils's memory at Ullr Fest.
