The looney is kicking the yankee dollars ass these past few months. I'm not happy that Canada did away with the GST refund on non-consumable goods and hotels either. And now my trip to Whistler each year ain't no bargain. But it's USD $0.96-0.97 to $1CND. A lot of Canadian businesses that export to the U.S. aren't happy with the exchange rate. If the fed drops the interest rate by a 1/4 point next week, then look for parity on the exchange rate.

I agree with you on the tax refund. I don't think it's fair to tax tourists.
It's no good for the manufacturing sector and lumber producers either. as far as me buying stuff though, it's cool.
I don't expect this trend will keep up forever::.:..::::.::.:.::..::.

In a perverse way the situation with the US dollar is helping my travel budget. I have a hard time planning a trip to Canada or Europe when things are like this. Looks like another year staying in the states for us.

Resort tax is a good thing, MT w/o a sales tax are letting millions of dollars out the door every year. Which is amazingly stupid considering touronism is the #2 industry in MT. Which is probably very similar to the resort areas throughout BC. I've also seen the improvements of the infrastructure in Whitefish since they implemented resort tax and think w/o it maybe the mountain would be under the radar and I could afford to live within 30 minutes of a ski area in MT. 5 or 6 percent of a vacation isn't that big a hit anyway. what really sucks is west virginia taxes you at the friggin grocery store.

higher taxation = higher prices = reduced tourism numbers = less business for local businesses. Priced in US $ will Whistler be the most expensive ski area in N. America this season?
How far, and how fast, will the dollar fall?Last edited by cj001f; 09-15-2007 at 05:55 PM.
