Man BCR, that is a beautiful floating bar!

And DJ comes in with the "well I had a few spare moments so I furnished my living room with a gorgeous matching stand, made gorgeous cutting boards for the neighbors and made Christmas ornaments for half the free world.

Looked back and I don't think I posted this one either. Boredom and I don't get along well let's just say. When work and the schools shut down and we were home with all 4 kids homeschooling, each of their 4 schools called for "virtual gym". Yeah, f that, let's go learn a trade. 12,000 bricks, 9,600 pounds of stone, 7,500 pounds of crushed concrete, 2,500 pounds of sand, and 6 months later and all 4 kids can now lay a mean patio and we all added some bulk to our small frames (wouldn't have gotten that from virtual gym in the living room).

Hell yeah! Put those kids to work!

I'm planning to host a "summer camp" for my niece when she's 8 or so. We're going to build a ton of stuff, rebuild an engine, do some welding, etc. She'll need those skills (and war rig driving) later in life when the world falls into ruin.

In the interest of keeping the thread up top so I can see more cool projects, I'll add another. First start-to-finish bathroom remodel (I have more balls than brains as marble mosaic is not a great idea for your first big tiling job). Combined two rooms for size and added a powder room with a pocket door. Only wish would be that it's not currently located at my ex-wife's house.

Knocking down dead little trees is still a great gig. But this is probably the last landscape gig I'll do. I have my own giant yard to take care of. It was a fun diversion while work was slow but now I'm not feeling it so much. I might build some more boxes but more like build panels and deliver vs this was removing and retrofitting her old raised beds. Underestimated time, I would have finished it more if mine or I had more time.

Fairly happy with the stairs though.

Finished a fun metal stair project at my parents cabin. Three years ago I tore out the existing exterior stairs at my parents place on Mt Lemmon, and found out the deck they attached to was at the end of its life as well. Rebuilt that with some steel beams to replace the rotted wood. Then we evacuated when the last fire went through in 2020. Then I had shoulder surgery. Then I went to Montana. So this project has been hanging for a few years. Good to get it out of my head!

The whole thing is attached to the hillside at just two points - A 'stump' attached to the rock under the landing, and another point about halfway down the lower run

Man, I have very mixed feelings about the place. When I hear someone badmouth the area, I get defensive, but really, it is an absolutely miserable experience to ski there now. They kinda hate winter up there, it is a PITA. in summer, the ski lift skyride runs 1/4 speed, it never breaks, and it just takes 2 workers to run it. I learned there 51 years ago, my dad finally had to stop patrolling (only paid patroller, his retirement gig for 30 years) 3 years ago when he was 80. It takes 3 days for the road to open, they basically stall until all the snow is melted from the road. Profoundly frustrating to have the snow go to glop before the county road opens, every fucking time. So it goes.

I built a drop down table for coffee cupping at a friend's roasting facility. It's finished in white piano lacquer. (We also built the room it's in, but my guys did most of that work.)Click image for larger version.

A little more on the #dreamshack: half of the birdmouths cut and fitted, measuring other ends, measuring out the purlins (sp?)/

(and yes I'm a master slacker when it comes to working in the rain)

Been a bit since this was at the top. I've been slacking on the projects in the first half of the year. Too much revenge vacation happening

    1. Finishing out the scrap/leftovers bookcase

    2. Starting some walnut/purpleheart corner shelves

    3. Installed corner shelves

    4. Two cherry scrap hat rack for the boy and me

Somewhere between 2 and 3 DJSapp jr's scout troop needed to do a wood project, so everyone built pinewood derby display racks out of cherry. And by build, I mean I precut and drilled 7 of those for them to sand, assemble and finish. For some reason I didn't get a photo of that pile of lumber I prepped out.

#dreamshack progress at the lugubrious rate in between the 95F and the rain and a million other excuses.

Just got the purlins done on one side for the 8" overhang. I have to patch the board since the length is 18', but it's set up to do from the ladder.

View from the top, then from the bottom.

So the 2x on the flat are for the facia overhang framing? Not a fan of anything structural on the flat.

Those are the lookouts holding the barge rafter so it should be good.

That's a joist, not a rafter and even if it was a rafter you would still have them on edge for strength. Unless that is hitting a bearing wall on either end, which is highly unlikely and still would not be code. Ideally I'd head off the last joist and then let the lookout (on edge) sit on the exterior wall and/or joist hanger every one.

I realize this is just a shack, so not critical. Just add more nails and it's all good.

You guys with your tech terminology. almost as bad as C++11 smart pointer gobbledeegook.

It's an 8' overhang to the edge of the fascia, so I thought that construct would be enough. We only very occasionally get snowloads here, but I figure that these 2x6 purlins would be enough at 48" spacing across 3 of the 2x8 rafters. The edge is a load bearing wall. Where the purlins meet the fascia support, there's metal angle brackets for extra support, end nailed as well.

Plus, I didn't know how to do it otherwise.

Any pointers are welcome, I still have to do the northside overhang.

Yes. The rafters are 2x8s spanning 12 feet on 16" centers across 10 feet wide.

I thought about the strength of the purlins would be better on edge, but I didn't want to cut into the rafters that much.

I can do hangers on the other edge if that's the schmahrter way to go.

You should start referring to those rafters as 2x6s with the amount of meat you cut out of them as it is….
