Most dimensional doug fir is second growth bullshit. If it is truly OG and clear vertical grain, you should go buy all of right now.

That said, there is a reason why fir comes in dimensional lumber: because it's structural. Standard "whitewood"/SPF/whatever junk pine 2x4s and 2x6s are not rated for anything except studs.

    The doors are fir .
If they were oak you would 1 or 2 more hinges on that door .
Oak weighs twice as much as fir .

I'm working in a house right now that is trimmed entirely in the most perfect straight-grained Douglas Fir I've ever seen. There are 18" wide pieces covering some beams. The homeowner isn't thrilled with it, but MAN is it pretty. I really hope I don't have to rip a bunch of it out...

I did buy all of it they had (this was a year ago). Used some of it for a laminated outrigger arm on a canoe I should post picks of.

Looks like you got robbed. That's horizontal grain DF, not VG.

The seller claiming oak should have known better but that certainly doesn't make them any less beautiful.

Hope you didn't take offense at the waffle house comment, hawk...they're beautiful doors...i saw waffles..
I've been working with @4000 board feet of 8/4 VG Doug fir for a couple months ..horse stable & barn doors...oiled a couple yesterday..maybe a post coming, maybe not..but there should be no lingering doubts that you have doug fir..

    cool mailbox Alpin..

Never thought about this before, but what is the difference? I have only seen CVG fir. You never see CVG oak. Why is that? It is a deciduous/ coniferous thing?

the floors ARE oak, lol, but I did not lay them... neighbor does it for a living and much easier to watch someone else work. I did re-lay the red rock on fireplace and gas insert. Liner was bad in fireplace and was very expensive to replace.

Okay... for some reason, I now see those pics. Definitely fir. Whoever said oak, is psychotic.

Nice job stripping them too, hawkgt... all those inside corners and edges are tough to do and keep square. (I know, trust me...) What'd ya put on the exterior, though... looks like it's fading already?

Cool basement transformation, too. Nice man cave, but those floors look like fir... ha ha.

I cut the tree down, cut it into two 12' and one 8' section this piece is roughly 24" wide. We got slabs from 16-25" wide. Had it milled here in town, don't quite have the setup for milling. This will be a 5' long top with a 4' long lower shelf. Waiting on my steel legs to arrive and then it's about wrapped up. Pretty simple project all in all. Ill post up the final product when it's complete. Making an end table too with other pieces. Don't know if ill have time to make it before Xmas though.

It's unfinished steel so it should rust over time for a rustic look. Here's a pic of the legs. Found them online, $45 for the legs seemed like a good deal to me. I didn't have time to fuck around with the welding portion since we are headed to the in laws this week. Had to kind of throw this project together last minute.

Hahaha. Just like the lumber yard labels round closet rod as "quartersawn."

...unless they rip and turn quarter sawn 2x's.

I did not realize that (from at least one source) the middle boards cut while plain sawing is considered 'quarterswan'. Seems like cheating a little, but can net wider boards. Any insights on plainswan/quartersawn's stability?:

    vs from this source:

Nice quaurterswan beetle kill table top rmnpsplitter! Beautiful board. Beetle kill T&G ceilings were the trend years ago and I ran miles of the stuff. None as nice and full of character as your piece.

If you don't want a lot of unpredictable movement and need minimal shrinkage in the width of a board you want quartersawn =vertical grain...

So yes, quartersawn is much more stable....

^^ actually I think you were asking about the vertical grain created by the plainsawn cut vs vertical grain created by quartersawn....it's the same ...at that point it's just semantics..doesn't matter how you get it...it's the same wood with the same attributes

Something new to me...making windows... I created a space in the doors thinking I had some pre-mades at the approximate measurement.....I didn't

I used whatever wood was laying around...some pressure treated, some oak, some pine

square peg in a round hole actually works

    thanks for looking :-)
