    Garnett is a Celtic

I can't decide if I'm psyched about this or not. I think I am, but Danny Ainge is such a huge fucking fool that I fear the loss of Al Jefferson will prove a very bad thing.

Whaddy'all think? Base? Dallas? I need some opinions to hang my own on.

I'm waiting to see the details. Still, it's hard to argue when one of the top 5 or 10 best players in the league join your team.

I predict there will be at least 20 articles by Bill Simmons next month dealing directly or indirectly with the KG deal.

Celtic success --> Bill Simmons's normally strong NBA writing turns to crap.

Celtics give up the farm, get KG. They'll send Big Gay Al Jefferson, Run 'n' Gun Bassy Telfair, Gerald "I don't have a nickname" Green, Ryan "Tampa Bay Devil Rays Infielder Jonny" Gomes, and at least one #1 pick and get the Big Ticket in return. I think there's some question over whether Gomes is included, and whether it's two #1s or just one. Either way I love it, if only because it returns the C's to relevancy for the first time in 5 years or so. Realistically, though, they are instantly one of the best teams in the East, and I think they can actually attract some decent veterans who'll want to play alongside KG.

just think two years of Garnett and then you get the Sixers or the Hawks to trade the farm for him. inadvertently Ainge might have done well.

Al Jefferson is good, not great. and the rest of those clowns weren't going to be any kind of championship nucleus.

From boston.com: Because of all the contracts involved, the league may not officially sign off on the trade tonight and Garnett's contract still needed to be reworked.

One source did say that the reworking of Garnett's contract could still be a sticking point. Among the issues still to negotiate are the player option worth $24 million that Garnett holds for the 2008-09 season as well as a 15 percent trade kicker which must be paid in real cash at the time of the deal.

According to multiple league sources, Garnett must agree to waive a portion of the trade kicker worth approximately $6.75 million. If Garnett agrees to that contingency, then he would have some additional leverage as the Celtics attempt to restructure his current contract. Slowing down the trade/approval process is the fact that Garnett is on a cruise until the end of this week.

Yeah, there are things to work out for sure. I have to think they got Garnett's approval to seek a deal with Boston- plus, negotiations like this are what agents are for.

Just think, the Celtics might have a game on national TV next season! This is incredible.

Yeah, I'm psyched. It'll be interesting to see what they'll do at the point, but there's gonna be a lot of scoring in Beantown next year. Here's hoping Tony Allen and his defense make a full comeback.

...and that either they get someone to play PG or that Rondo has figured things out on the offensive end.

In other news...who the fuck cares?? KG had a team built around him more than once in MN and couldn't get it done.

But I hate thugball - oops - I mean basketball anyway. Back to your regularly scheduled programming.

...just another in a long history of poor trades made by Minnesota sports franchises. If the Celtics had thrown in Hershel Walker, this deal would have been sealed weeks ago!

And no, KG did not really ever have a real team built around him...he has always been surrounded by underachieving young players or over the hill veterans.

LOL!! Yeah, the Vikings do it too. Just another in a long line of MN sports mistakes. KG had EVERY opportunity afforded him - he was the Golden Child here for the last decade. You're right to a certain extent about the team though - but with that said, doesn't that kind of seem to be the pattern in most pro sports?

Steven - not jealous. Seriously, I could give 2 shits about Minnesota sports these days with the exception of the Wild.

If the team folded - along with the Vikings - I wouldn't lose any sleep. It would be less tax money being STOLEN from me to build stadiums for billionaires (the Wild included here...). We're already getting fleeced by the Twins - AGAIN, and the Gophers are getting a new stadium on the taxpayers as well. 20 years ago, none of these teams "could play without an indoor stadium", so we bought them one. Now they all need an outdoor park - what's next? Meanwhile the lakes, rivers, and public hunting areas are getting destroyed, but by God, the Vikings, Twins, and Gophers are getting new facilities!! I can't imagine how much moey the state bears to lose if the outdoor sports industry (fishing, hunting, boating, etc.) goes to hell...

Well, whoever gets KG - enjoy him. He's one of about 3 classy NBA players out there.

I'm pretty high on the trade from a MN view. Nobody dislikes KG, he's the single reason that Bristol (and the rest of the world) can locate Minneapolis on a map. The trouble was that he alone was not enough to draw fans and at 31 years old, he still has never become a killer. You can count on two hands the number of game winning shots he's hit and even an arabian caught stealing twice could count the number of game winning shots he's made in the playoffs.

We got Big Gay Al, a couple of solid players to even out the contract debacle and most importantly, 2 first round picks. The running joke here has been that Ainge offered McHale two options: the above mentioned trade or whatever is under this box....I for one am pleasently suprised that Kevin resisted his instincts and made the deal.

Wow, have you been taping my dinner conversation? With the exception of the Gopher Stadium (they were roped into the Metrodome by the Vikings and Twins, having the Gophs was the only way they could get the deal done and get the state to sign off on the sales tax increase in MPLS, which even long after the Dome was paid for you pay everytime you enjoy a glass of Jamison at the Local) I'm all in favor of sending all of our professional sports teams packing. Also with the Gophers, the UofM is a "public good", that and they should have NEVER left campus. When I went to the U, we'd go to hockey games, basketball, but rarely football. It ment driving or trying to take a bus, only to be out numbered in our own stadium by people from WI, and then the quality of play was DII at best.

Back to KG, Boston- You're getting a great player and a great guy. One of the few Class Acts in professional sports. He's sort of a neighbor of mine, see him from time to time at local stores, and is always great with the kids, taking time to say hello, sign an autograph, etc. I rarely follow the NBA anymore, too many thugs, so I have no idea who we're getting but I know we're looseing a pretty decent citizen. Hope he stays here in the offseason.

Yeah, KG has never been a stone cold killer at the end of games, but it won't matter in Boston, because he has Allen and Pierce to handle that.

KG, Pierce, Allen, and 2 bags of chips looks like your eastern conference champion.

Right on. Who did he ever have to knock down shots at crunch time? Sam Cassell isn't a great jump shooter by any means- he's not in Pierce or Allen's league, at least. I'm more worried about who's going to bring the ball up the floor, but the offseason isn't over yet.

I love this deal. The more I think about it the more sense it makes. Bill Simmons actually nails it in his column, but gives Ainge zero credit for pulling this off. I don't think that's fair- I'm pretty sure Ainge was convinced at the time of the draft that he could get either Jermaine O'Neal or Garnett to fill the middle. I mean, think he knows Larry Bird and Kevin McHale pretty well? Think those guys talk a fair amount?

It's not as if this is one of the great days in franchise history or anything, but it's big. Even if it doesn't work out and they don't win 50 games, it's still big, if only because Celtic basketball is somewhat meaningful again. And I can't WAIT for the media guide to come out with Russell and Garnett on the cover....

I can't fault McHale for making the move despite Sports Guy's ramblings of his conitued contributions to the Celtics, even post '93. When you've fvcked the cap for the next 5 years, have a team full of 1's and 2's, all surrounding 25 million, you've got to do something. Although the fact that all we did was get back a pick that we never should have given away in the first place sours the deal a bit. I am already in line at my local Sam Goody for the inevitable Telfair/Hudson complilation CD.

The guy couldn't kill a thread. I honestly hope you're right. I'd like to see him win. At least I never have to hear "come 4th quarter, bring it to the ticket" again.
