TR - Timpanogos 7-8-07 (dialup warning)

So there's still some skiable snow left in the Wasatch, but it requires some effort to get to. Irish lass Eimaer is visiting town having just arrived from a surfing safari in Indo and Oz, and was up for a bit of a hike. Despite being a surfer rather than a skier, she was still game to check out the remaining snow on Timp as the break in the Great Salt Lake kinda sucks.

We headed up from the Aspen Grove TH - the main snowfield isn't visible for quite awhile.

Plenty of water and waterfalls on the hike:

    And flowers in full bloom:

Amidst verdant fields of wildflowers, we're almost at the lake after about 3 hours of hiking (including time for a couple of detours):

From the lake, the snowfield is pretty much a straight shot up. Bootpacking almost at the top:

Eimaer topping out at the saddle - you can see the haze in the background from all the forest fire activity lately:

Eimaer glissading down the lower section. She was a bit nervous at first, and had to downclimb the steep section at the top (where her ice climbing skills came in handy). She then slid down the trench for aways before she could get upright, but was in control throughout. Overall, she had a great time and is now keen to learn how to ski.

Snow was fast summer firn, about 1000 continuous vf down to the lake, but it won't last too much longer. It's starting to get suncupped, yet remains pretty good. Many craters in the snowfield from rockfall need to be dodged and there's some slow-moving sloughage to keep an eye out for. The steepest line is skiers left above a hanging scree field.

Timp's surrounding geology is always magnificent:

Among the last few turns of the '06-'07 season:

    That's just wrong.
I am excited she wants to learn to ski. Don't tell her about ski pants, though.

Tri, what are you wearing under your Donjoys?

Looks like some sort of sock for the leg? What does it help with, sweat, digging in,....?? I am not sure. Enlighten me please.

Looks real fun. I was looking up there yesterday evening from a Riverton golf course thinking you guys are pretty cool to be still getting after it.

Nothing more to add except that "sock for the leg" is the funniest thing I've heard all day.

Nice pics Tri-U. I miss Timp. sniff.

Buzz, The "sleeve" under the brace prevents chafing/rubbing etc. Mine makes things that much hotter but it's definitely more comfortable.

    Sweet little TR!

If anyone wants to earn some turns in North America you got to work for it.

    Beautiful hike! Good job.

fwiw, leg sleeve isn't nearly as funny as leg sock.

How about leg tube or tube sock?

I have a cti brace and it came with one, but it's the same concept. Check the website- they may sell them separately. Otherwise you could probably make a "leg tube sock" er sleeve er "brace liner" using an old pair of polypro long johns and just cut it above and below the brace.

So buzz, my braces came with leg socks, but I've actually got on some CW-X 3/4 compression tights beneath the DonJoys, mostly to keep the braces from rubbing my skin raw where the straps come around. I wore the braces the whole day, both on the up, during the ski and all the way down, some 9 hours total. They're money, though - usually, my knees are absolutely killing me after hiking down a long descent like Timp, but with the DonJoys on they were fine.

Are other people having trouble getting all the pics to load? Stupid picture hosting site.

Same here. Loaded fine. Sweet report!

Skied the bird last week. Going fast, but still fun. I'll be up there again next week for some more summer turns.

P.S. Not all pics loaded at first, but hitting refresh again took care of this.
