Ima take a different tack.
Eddie Hinton: Dear Y'all: Songwritting Sessions for starters.
Derek Trucks Band: Joyful Noise Followed by Soul Serenade
Lately I have revisted in a big way The Band. Man were they fantastic musicians. Music from another planet when you put it in context with the time period they hit their stride. Music from the Big Pink and then cue up Rock of Ages.

I don't know if this type of music is your bag but these three albums are in my top ten all time favorite shit list
James Holden - Balance 005 - Holden's sense of swell, build, phase, reverb, frequency, and bass line complimentary are nothing short of the intricacies that can be found in the roar of a waterfall as the London Symphonic Orchestra performs Gustav Holst's Planets Symphony. Straight up the best mix I have ever heard.
Dj Shadow - Private Press - The whole album is good but personally, Blood on the Motorway is the only reason to search the album out, at first listen I didn't get the song but it quickly became an alltime favorite.
Sharam's - Globabl Underground -Toronto Afterclub Mix - I'm not much for copying other peoples reviews or anything, but it's all been said. This CD is awesome, from start to finish. It was mixed masterfully, and the track selection was brilliant. You're gonna stand there, owning a fireworks stand, and tell me you don't have no whistling bungholes, no spleen spliters, whisker biscuits, honkey lighters, hoosker doos, hoosker donts, cherry bombs, nipsy daisers, with or without the scooter stick, or one single whistling kitty chaser?

The moral of Ween: if you smoke enough weed in your parent's basement in PA in the 80s while pretending to be 70s stadium rock gods, you just might become stadium rock gods in the 00s. I've always gotten a kick out of them, but Deaner's guitar blew me away last summer at the Greek.

Kruder & Dorfmeister: 'K & D Sessions'
I just got this recently and it's absolutely amazing. It's a large collection of remixes that's comprised of some broken beat, trip-hop, and hip-hop.

Well, it's out and it's really delicious. These guys have the retro synth-pop 80's sound down to a science, mixed in with a good amount of funk. Listening to it makes me want to roller skate at a fondue party while drinking mojitos. (And if you want to seduce Flowtron for some reason, buy this album and play him the song with the sax solo.)
Tendreroni MP3
Not sure if this is worth another beer, maybe a refreshing wine cooler....possibly a Zima.

When I first read the OP, Chuck Ragan jumped into my head, really really good blusey/folk with a slight punk undertone. Reading on I see that you liked HWM, I've found that enjoying Chuck's solo stuff really comes down to a matter of being able to stand his voice, which it sounds like you can.
If you like his gravelly pirate voice (I do) chances are you will like his solo stuff, anyone I've played it for that disliked it did so mainly cause they hate his voice, musically it's quite good, but his voice is very polarizing.
I'll have to check out the Draft, it would be cool to see them and Chuck at the same show. Not that HWM reunion shows are that uncommon, just not in my neck of the woods.
Other suggestions:
The Loved Ones-- I'm just starting to get into them. Philly punk band, actually remind me of a poppier HWM.
Balzac-- Discovered these guys through Pandora (seriously go to that site), they are considered "The Misfits of Japan". I guess they've toured with The Misfits a lot and have similar lyrical tendencies, musically they are a bit more polished.
I'll second suggestions of the Weakerthans, Samiam, New Amsterdams.
Here are some from the vault just in case you don't know:
Jawbreaker, Quicksand, Early to mid-career Saves the Day (Through Being Cool, Stay What You Are, Can't Slow Down, ignore the other albums), New Order (if you're in an electronic mood), Lawerence Arms, The Get Up Kids (plus some of the side projects, Reggie and The Full Effect, New Amsterdams, Blackpool Lights and another one or two I can't come up with right now), Choking Victim, gotta love some old school Pennywise when in that kinda mood, can't leave out Social D.
Good luck on the hunt, Pandora and Songza can be your best friends on this adventure.

holy shiza this thread is pure gold. I'm loving it. alot. may I suggest the avett brothers: four thieves gone for a solid bit of acoustic, scream and harmony. This might be THE best live act I have seen. Again, they're well known now, so you might already have this. Needless to say, they blend energy with quality lyricism, which is sweet.
If you like what NPG suggests (PS, Nick, Kruder and dorfmeister DJ Kicks is pretty epic as well) check out Her Space Holiday. Electronica with mellow, if not somber lyrics. I wouldn't call it depressing, more like thoughtful music with a synthasized backing.
