    King Crimson

Nothing like some KC to make your night. Seen these guys live once and they are a treat.

Who else is rocking the Crimson?

love me some Fripp, have seen KC about 6 times since they came back in 99.
fripp and belew = two of the worlds best guitarists on one stage add bill bruford and levin and then add trey gunn and pat for even more rythmic punch and it's a can't lose situation.

Well I'm actually listening to Zappa but Belew could be playing in the mix somewhere. Crimson rocks. So does Zappa of course.

I'm a major fan of KC: 'Lark's Tongue in Aspic', 'Starless and Bible Black', 'Red' all among my most fav ablums of all time.

    Almost as good as Zappa.

Fripp is a genious on all spectrums.

KC vs. Zappa is always a tough call, but at the moment I would have to go with KC. I don't think anyone has come close to cloning their sound since they first came out with their first album.

Besides the milestones Buster mentioned I'm a big fan of the 80's series with Adrian Belew:

    Discipline
    Beat
    Three of a Perfect Pair

    ^^^ That's good stuff, thanks!

The new lineup is kind of growing on me, but they need to do less covers:

Saw them in 1985 at the Greek in Berkeley. One of the all-time greatest live shows I have ever seen. My folks were rather strict about me going to shows in HS, so I had to choose between KC (Three of a Perfect Pair tour) and Van Halen (1984 tour). Never did see VH.

The opening act for the Greek show was a juggler/comedian.
When Crimson took the stage they came out one at a time. I believe Bruford came out first, then Levin, then Fripp, each riffing for several minutes until the next member took the stage. Finally Belew came out with his hand painted Mondrian looking Strat hanging around his waist and he was juggling some colored balls borrowed from the comedian. He threw the three balls he was juggling out into the audience and began wailing on his twang bar.

Saw KC again in 1995, this time a sit down show and it was kinda stuffy and not as energetic as their Greek show. The lackluster nature of that gig kinda soured me on seeing them again.

Loved the early stuff. I haven't really listened to the later albums with shuffled lineups. Does the hive have a standout album to recommend from 80's forward?

    My vote is for Discipline

I didn't get hip to KC until Three of a Perfect Pair and then I went backwards through their catalog, fwiw.

And while not KC, I really dug the stuff Fripp did with Andy Summers and I really dug Adrian Belew's first two solo albums as well as the infectious pop he made with The Bears...

This makes me want to listen to more of them.

I bought the CD In the Court of the Crimson King on a recommendation from a record store clerk. He said "if you see a trippy album cover from the late 60's, just buy it". Seems like sound advice.

    Where should I go next?

x2 for Dookey's endorsement of Discipline, for the older sound I'd go Red and Starless & Bible Black and Fripp's solo work Exposure is worth a run through.

Just saw yesterday that one of the three drummers from the last band passed away from cancer in 2020, saw that lineup a couple times. Three drummers out front, rest of the band behind them, so awesome, so Fripp

This is one of my favorite early Crimson joints, even if it pretty much riffs on "21st Century Schizoid Man"...

I really liked the instrumental Bewitched album he did with Summers. Great instrumental chill music

Robert Fripps reasoning for disallowing recordings at concerts was not based on an 'artistic rights to the music' argument but rather on a desire to get the audience to be present and attentive for the show and not be distracted by the acts of recording. Over the years, my appreciation of that observation has grown, especially in light of gopros and social media.

Loved the KC and Zappa reference Buster, that took me way back. I don't really listen to much of either anymore, but there was a time when both dominated my play list. Before I close my eyes for the last time, I want to hear https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J1JjOpXsJ7A

I was fortunate to see Adrian Belew live several times in younger days; the first was with Zappa's band back in the late 70's. The only specific thing I recall from that show was a bit they did in one of the songs (which one, I don't recall) where Frank turned to Belew (who was "playing" Bob Dylan, replete with harmonica and neck holder) and said (in enhanced tv announcer voice, as only Zappa could) "Take it away, Bob!", at which point Belew started hee-haw'ing like a donkey for an extended "solo" on the mouth organ.

    Priceless, in every regard.

Bit of a tangent, but did you know Flo & Eddie sang backup vocals on this tune (produced by Todd Rundgren)?
