Really looking forward to it too. With a little apprehension.
Tintin albums are so perfect, I wonder how a movie could do them justice.

Excited, but also apprehensive. Big fan of Tintin, but like philippeR said, how could a movie do justice? I recall seeing a Tintin cartoon and an Asterix one too many years ago. The biggest letdown were the voices -- they sounded nothing like what I had imagined in my mind when reading the comics.

I always thought the old Tin Tin cartoons were pretty good representations of the books.

Asterix movies? You should count yourself lucky to have never seen the live action ones with Gerard Depardieu as Obelix.

    Lightbulb

Ration my Rum! Blistering Barnacles! Thundering Typhoons! 3d animation would suck!

I say bring on the real live actors.

    Simon Pegg as Tintin

    Jean Reno as Captin Haddock

I dunno, the cartoons I saw in French class didn't do the characters justice and the voices were ass.
I'm cautiously optimistic (seems like that's all I've got these days) that this will be a step in the right direction. In any event, if it sucks, we all still have the books.

Tin Tin could be good. Asterix and Obelix? I cant see a good movie being made of it. Unless its got like 300 type feel to it. Magic Potion, more blood and guts, you know.

WHo plays Tim Tin? Brad Pitt?

You mean his voice, I assume, since I'm certain your reading comprehension skills have allowed you to deduce that these films will be ANIMATED.

Uderzo did allow several Asterix & Obelix feature length cartoons to be made. They totally cheaped out tho and they looked horrible (I recently watched Asterix in America with my daughter.) You can probably find them in your video store or on Netflix... The voiceovers suck even worse than the animation.

This thread has got me wondering how much a complete set of Tin Tin and/or Asterix books would cost?

    Live action Asterix

Actualy, if Asterix Vs Caesar was uber lame, Asterix - Mission Cléopatre was really funny. But probably too 'french' for a foreign audience : I guess that most of the jokes and gags wouldn't make much sense ouside of France. Which is probably a problem with the albums as well. I've always wondered how most of Goscinny's puns and very frenchy references could be translated.

Live action Tintin : Les oranges bleues.

The English translations are exquisite and have very careful rewriting of the Frenchy stuff.

Interesting I've never seen or heard of the live action Tin Tin movie.

There were 2 of them, produced in the mid 60's. Tintin et les oranges bleues and Tintin et le Mystère de la toison d'or. Both on original storylines. If you can get your hands on a copy they definitely worth a look. Good cast and a retro charm.

Edited to note that the real live action Tintin, without Tintin, would be the brilliant L'homme de Rio, by Philippe de Broca, featuring Belmondo. A movie that Spielberg suppposedly wanted to remake and that is said to have inspired the Indiana Jones films.

That movie is probably one of my top 5 favorites of all time. I used to watch it iwth my dad when I was a little kid, and it's one of the main factors in my interest in Brasilian music. There are so many great scenes in it...
    "rose, with green stars"
the bar fight on the river
that space-pod house on the hill that the kid lived in... awesome!
and last but not least the PBY!!!! I want one of those soooo bad.

Phillipe - I'll look out for them thanks for the info.

L'Homme de Rio - found a torrent for it (although with that title I might be in for an unpleasant surprise?) look forward to watching it.

I'll need scrape the rust off of my school boy French.

Phil - It was the right movie. But had eyes tight shut when I hit the play button just in case.

Liked it - Although I'm sure crappy quality video and awful sound didn't do it justice.

I still think Reno would have been a better Haddock.

If they fuck it up then they're just a bunch of bashi-bazouks and poltroons. Still cautiously optimistic four years later.
