I'd lean toward the lump sum for two reasons. I assuming you have other saving and SS and this amount is not indexed to inflation.
1) If you are disciplined and invest even somewhat conservatively in something like TIPS. Even with a 4 % withdrawal per year, you could get $10k a year out and still possibly retain the $250k to leave to a charity or a friend assuming you never use it for anything else like a roof or car.
2) I don't know who manages this assumed pension, but I have seen them go broke and benefits cut even with the backing of the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation.

Serious question. What is the max amount per $100k invested that someone could pull out monthly without reducing the principal in the most aggressive scenario currently available? If that initial investment amount right now was maxed at $400k how much could it turn monthly and and how quickly could it happen?

I added one more. Could have added three more. Maybe four.

After reading more about mREITs I bought a bit more TWO and AGNC both of which are agency backed MBSs. But after realizing the entire sector is correlated so that diversification in that game is a fools errand I dumped those flat and went for IVR which is what I thought would be the most upside (70% of portfolio is Agency MBS - 30% is non Agency MBS per their last 10Q) but also has some pretty awe-inspiring leverage 6 - 7% debt/equity ratio! - I guess those dividends don't come without risk).

Entire sector moving in lockstep with markets so I'm now slightly green on IVR. Patiently awaiting the Fed money tree for mReits

Following Mazderatis' instincts I dumped half of the IVR I dumpster dived when I followed it all the way averaging down to asspound land keeping half for that magic 8ball Fed relief (the successors to TARP are meeting today so who knows). The proceeds recover what I put in so the remainder are notionally free. 3 days of upmarket cant be taken for granted.

Shorted some more CCL on the theory that the recent PP at 8 and the converts are 10 are likely also selling. Options still as pricey as ever
