Option implied vol swinging around can make it hard to make money just buying puts.

I would second that. unless it is announced the Fed is starting a new quantative easing program, over the next 12 to 24 months; being short is the way to go.

I'd make it nice and easy and short the s+p until it is down 20% from the top, a bear market. there are dozens of etfs to do that with. after 20%, take out your principal and just use profits until thingd reverse.

I like a 1x2 ratio spread. Sell an at the money put and buy 2 otm puts, 3 months out. Net credit. Net long deltas, net long Vega. Then wait and buy a little stock if we dump 10% but then let it run either way from there.

I had been looking to short since the FED started raising rates and pulling money out, went in and got stopped out a few times, currently in from 2800 s+p and staying until it's 20% down from the top.
