    Driving food poll

So, I drove to and from SoCal (from Utah) this weekend, and this morning it occurred to me, as I shoved the last donut into my mouth and washed it down with sugary fake coffee, that I always eat and drink like shit when on a road trip.

There I was in the gas station, looking for something healthy, and there I was buying the doughnuts when I realized the healthy food hunt was futile.

Am I the only one? Is this an epidemic? Is this why we're all so fat?

What do you eat on a road trip?

This year, I drove from NJ to Utah. ...plenty of coffee; Red Bull; chocolate; Clif Bars; granola and Trail Mix. I also smoked 2 big fat stogies (and I don't smoke cigars)

I'm really bad about stuffing fast food down my gullet and drinking more coffee than you could imagine possible on a road trip.

Depending on the length of trip, passengers and urgency it all changes. If it's just me I go 8 hours with no food, I smoke a fatty in the first 15 minutes of the drive and I don't need food for the day if I get into the groove.

If I'm driving with the fambly I stop for real food.
    You are what you eat.

I drink water on road trips, just because it's better for me than soda (blah) or coffee (only in the mornings). However I have been known to grab the occasional bar of chocolate or peanut MnMs. And.....I'm also guilty of the packaged pastry in the morning. Yet I still stand there looking at the back of all the packages to find the least bad option.

    PS I love road trips!!!

That's how I always feel, finding the least bad option that is the most filling. It's a fine line.

I'll usually grab a cold 12 pack of dew when I top off the tank at the indian reservation. They'll keep their brothers cold for hours. I can down a 12 oz. and not pee for hours, but that 20 oz bottle will have me stopping within 45 minutes.

beef jerky/pringles are regular road snacks for me, just b/c the salty complements the sweet, sweet dew so well.

If I pass an Arby's, it's all about the jalapeno poppers.

I drink a lot of coffee, but if I drink a cup of coffee first thing in the morning I'll be stopping to drop a deuce within an hour or so. I try to avoid dropping deuces on the road.

Really though, pretty much everything on that list will get eaten, depending on my mood.

Normal road trip is from Tahoe to SLC so an haute cuisine stop in Winnemucca, or Battle Mountain, or Wendover is always a welcome relief

Rockstar or Gatorade to start - perfect spitters. Sunflower seeds the rest of the way or 'til the mouth bleeds. No coffee, agree with the aforementioned road-poop-not-so-coolness.

For road trips all you need is water, a big bag of Arby's regular roast beef sandwiches, and a few packs of Spree's.

i don't know how people drink that rockstar and related hyper sugar/caffeine crap.

i try to eat as normally as possible on roadtrips. lots of water, as little sugar, grease, fat as possible.

homemade/deli sandwiches, but if i break down and buy something, anything from a taqueria instead of a burger joint if i'm going to buy something (yes, i know, tends to contradict the grease and fat idea).

green tea in a thermos instead of coffee if i can manage it. costco has some good granola bars by nature valley i think that are not pure sugar and/or chocolate for dessert.

DTM and I do the 12 hour drive to Norcal once, maybe twice a year. We have learned that a small (and I mean small) cooler will do good things for you.

We have found the ways of eating healthy on the road. I feel like total shit if I eat crap on the way there and back, makes me even more tired.

We love, in no particular order:

    apples
    oranges
    grapes
    fruit leather
    jerky
    almonds
    pecans
dark chocolate (put that in the cooler with the fruit)
    water
    gatorade
sandwiches (if you have a quick minute to make one)
    dried fruit
    trail mix of any kind
    veggies
crackers (triscuts, low fat wheat thins...etc)
We love the Kettle brand chips, any flavor, very satisfying if you keep it under control!

I know there is more, but if you snack on a variety of these, you won't be hungry.

Oh, and I always take one Excedrine when I have to drive. I can't do that no doze stuff.
