    TR: harvesting skis in Kentucky

I recently went to KY to visit family and make some skis/ Long story short, I made some skis. They are 150-127-140 with rocker.
Well the skis came out of the press after 15 hrs. I like pictures so I use them to tell the story.
    Me geared up

    edges bent

    cores layed up

went for a mt ride while the cores dryed

Got back and started to mill the core

    edges on skis

    Suck the air

    they're out

cut apart but not yet finished.

    more finished pictures.

All in all I learned a great deal about making skis and I can't wait to build my next pair...

They are 180's - think east coast trees
They raw material cost in one pair is about 150-200
however I had to make the press cal and the core profiler.
I bought base material and glue in bulk. all said and done, I prob. have < $450
including start up costs and one time hits

I'm mounting them and skiing them this friday.
A TR is sure to follow.

Why Kentucky? Did your family/friend have a sweet wood shop to use??
Kentucky is known for known for thoroughbred horses, horse racing, bourbon distilleries, bluegrass music, automobile manufacturing, college basketball, and now ski production.

Either way, sounds like it was super fun and the skis look SICK!

    Thanks for the comps.
My dad has a sweet shop in KY. All the tools and space.
I now have everything I need except a joiner and planer.
Sherm - they're light - think pocket rockets
I grew up in KY and now live in upstate NY.

I always wanted to design and fab a pair of skis and now I'm hooked.

Wow, i'm really impressed! Those look awesome, and the finish seriously looks a lot better than a few of the custom companies skis I've seen out there.

Wow! Very cool. Not quite the ski that I thought you'd be making when you mentioned it that day at Magic. Siccck. I bet they will be a ton of fun! What's the flex like?

I played with the flex - it's almost pocket rocket soft in the first 12" then kinda sumo/old gotama in the waist and tail. I tried to match the sanouk's flex.

we'll see how they slay sky peak on Friday.
