Cool Whistler-Blackcomb Kid Stoke Pow TR

Whistler-Blackcomb April 07 :Fun in the Fog
    04/07/07-04/14/07
    A Kid stoke TR

I have been making a pilgrimage to Whistler since before there was a Village, or a Blackcomb, and my kid ticket was $4.50 CDN. The past 5 years this annual trip has now included my kids (8,6) and this year our friends from the UK flew over with theirs (9,6) as well. The weather at WB is always hit or miss, and we had to deal with some pretty serious fog on 6/8 days we skied.

Emma turned 6 last month, and I think she's getting the hang of this "ski" thingy.

The weather started out with fog and slush, and a bit of rain all the way to the top the first two days. Then everything froze. To quote the sign at the top of Harmony "Off-piste was cruel and unkind."

Christopher fights the crowds in Whistler bowl

It snowed ~3-4cm for Tuesday, enough to give the hill a nice clean coat and make everything look smooth. Still pretty much unskiable off-piste though; Spanky's stayed closed all week. But it was groomer heaven.

I dote pretty hard on my little girl. She's a blast to watch on the hill because at 6 she knows what to do to get the ski on edge and loves skiing fast.

But I swear she is bipolar. Or maybe that's just being female. All laughs one day and a raving lunatic the next. And it's never the I'm cold, I don't want to ski. Tuesday she was sobbing "I want to go back to Alpental and ski International" because she couldn't go ski the moguls. Sorry, but it's still frozen cross track today, and I'm not going to. Then she'll mope on the hill and try and go off and ski on her own.

Mach (age) five last month at Alpental:

I try veiled threats about making her go in early, stop it or you don't ski tomorrow, but I think she knows how to play me.

Emma got a little bored on this run. She kept trying to ski backwards so she may be getting twin tips next year.

Going for it in the terrain park

But Christopher shows her how a proper spread eagle is done

Friday it snowed all day and our last day Saturday brought ~35cm new and then a brief glimpse of the sun before returning to fog again.

Of course, it also brought out the crowds, and made me antsy to go off and ski without the kids but that wasn't really an option.

Emma gets her pow groove on in Jersey Cream Bowl

Then we lapped 7th heaven until the visibility was gone.

    Christopher finds some goodness

Psst. Keep both hand forward or...

    D'OH!

    A pleasant April pow surprise:

All in all a great time. Until next year WB.

Move upside and let the man go through...

You are teaching them right ! Have you ever considered USSA ski racing for your little guys ? I speak from experience that it is a great way to get your kids to love skiing. I have three daughters that have come up through the ranks and now have a life-long connection to skiing. I was at Whistler the same time you were with my 12 year old. She was racing on the USA team April 6, 7, and 8 in the Whistler Cup. It looks like you got much better conditions. We enjoyed, light drizzle and fog, but Whistler has great terrain and I will be back.

^^^ Really, that has the look of future "hippy pow" turns for sure!

The one downside to the WB, waiting out conditions!!!

Cool. We're a bit behind in development, but that's no surprise.

Same here...really looking forward to sharing vert with him.

Thanks for sharing, Mofro. Those kids are already displaying signs of ripper-ness.
