I like nice gear as much as the next guy, but I'll never understand these super expensive reels. All I ask is that it hold my line and have a capable drag. I have a good Teton on my 4 weight and a bunch of Scientific Anglers for all the rest. I don't think I paid $200 for any of them.

Come down here. I can show you why you need a good reel.

I agree, though. If you are targeting most types of river fish, you'll never even see your backing, never mind use your drag.

For a no drag reel, it's plenty stiff. It's also an open spool so you can palm it if needed.

I used to think the same about reels...but a super low friction start is key when conditions for steelhead merit using fine tippets (ie summer run) in low clear water. Still, I think there are plenty of reels available for 250-350ish range that fit that mark.

but hey, if you want to wear a $1500 Bogner fartbag, a $2500 Hardy prolly fits the style.

Reels are kinda like ski boots. You can have the most kick ass skis on the mountain, but if you don't have the right boots on you are not going to get the most out of your skis. Same with reels (and line, obviously). That being said, you don't have to have the most expensive boots either, just the ones that are right for you. Same with reels.
