Last week turned 40 and ran my first marathon-length run with 5000+’ of vert for good measure. Didn’t exactly crush it but I’ll take the moral victory.
I was kind of disappointed with how hard it felt, but I was driving on the freeway yesterday and looking at all the ground I covered from a distance, and I appreciated it a little more despite the lack of style points.

First 50k in the books
I ran my first ultra Saturday. The Baker Lake 50k. What a fantastic trail. 100% runnable, beautiful scenery, and we totally scored with perfect fall weather.
I'm pretty stoked by how it went. My only goal was to finish and be able to walk afterward. I had a plan for how I was going to run it and more importantly how I was going to eat during it. The nutrition part was the untested piece of the puzzle but I stuck to the plan and it worked. No GI issues and I didn't totally bonk before the finish so I guess things worked pretty well.
I'm going to dial running back to about 15-20 miles a week for the next few months and focus more on overall strength in preparation for ski season. I have some ideas of things to do next summer but my wife is pretty tired of having to work family commitments around my running schedule so I'm not going to get serious about any of my other ideas until there's a little distance from this race.

Rad! Looks gorgeous. I assume the fly agaric was not part of your nutritional strategy.

Thanks, doe. Whenever my legs are recovered and I'm back to running again, maybe I'll DM you for some Front Range runs.
Amazing pics isbd - where are they from?
Nice work, Buke!
I feel disappointed that I don't have thoughts on this, Falcon, but I'll keep it in mind.
"Comparison is the thief of joy." I don't know where that comes from but it's something I keep in mind as I look at all the people faster/stronger/with more endurance than me. A marathon with 5k climbing is no joke. It's easy to forget how hard events like that sounded when running a half marathon was a big accomplishment.

Running, Anyone...?
Still building mileage so my short runs have been from the house mostly. I hate running the hardtop and the rolling neighborhood trails are getting stale, so I jumped on the bike with some running shoes in the pack and rode up to the AT.
Can’t run far enough to get to the good views, but here’s a decent one from the bike on Skyline.
Remind me. We'll send him a red cap and a Speedo.

Pretty damned cool to be able to bike over to the at for a trail run!
Brandine: Now Cletus, if I catch you with pig lipstick on your collar one more time you ain't gonna be allowed to sleep in the barn no more!
Cletus: Duly noted.

Nope, I limit my wild mushroom picking to chanterelles and cauliflower mushrooms (sparassis radicata). I did see some lobster mushrooms on the run and a ton of jack-o-lanterns, among others. And this one Amanita that was just too cool not to stop for a photo.
It turns out, if handled super carefully, and consumed in small doses, that fly agaric might actually be edible, but I wouldn't risk it. More info here: https://www.bayareamushrooms.org/edu..._muscaria.html
I'm curious what others do for nutrition on really long runs?
Nutrition on long runs for me is hard because I never train longer than 18 or 20 miles and I can usually get by without fueling properly up until about mile 18. This go around I drank a UCan shake before the race, ate a few Cliff Blok gummies every half hour, ate a UCan bar at about 1.5 hours, drank another UCan shake at the halfway point around 3:15. I also ate a handful of potato chips and a couple oreos at the halfway point. Repeated on the 2nd half. By about hour 4 I couldn't stand the gummies anymore so I switched to a Honey Stinger Waffle and Honey Stinger gel. I didn't eat at all for the last hour because I figured that nothing I ate at that point would process until after the race anyway. It seemed to work well. No GI distress. I'm not sure how it would go on a longer run.

I think it's pretty personal, but this is what works for me:
Gu with caffeine and a drink with calories (like Tailwind) along with some plain old water. Salt tabs if it's hot. I'll add a PB and J, Lara bars or some jerky if I'm taking it easy or taking some breaks. But real food makes me sluggish/ sleepy/ slow down more (but not queasy or anything). I think you can simulate the gastrointestinal conditions of race or longer run by picking up the pace that the end of a 16-20 mile run when you haven't eaten in a while.

I’m doing a lot of urban running in the dark these days. Anyone have a headlamp they like?
I don’t need really long run time or long distance illumination, just something reasonably bright out to 20 feet and lightweight and somewhat cheap.

Nu25 with a shockcord headband (DIY or through lightsmith) weighs under an ounce so it won't bounce around and has plenty of runtime and brightness on its medium setting. Pretty cheap too.
(New account so I can't quote without getting my post errored out apparently)

Basically yes. I forget the exact trails but I started from the trailhead in Ross and ran up over the ridge north of tam and down to Stinson. Then back up all the way up to the east peak of tam and back down to Ross to make a loop. Pretty nice run but I still prefer running in the headlands.

Ha, yeah, I’m actually on that listserv and the author of that is the most frequent poster. I think I’ve read that piece, I’m any case I’ve definitely seen her take on fly agarics as edibles.
I’m not sure if it’s in that link, but there’s a story of some people who didn’t boil their muscarias in enough water before eating, them but they seemed to find the sweet spot of pretty pleasant-sounding delirium vs getting seriously ill.
I’ll stick with Tailwind, pro bars and stroop waffles on my runs.
I read that you should try to consume 200 calories per hour and I’ve been doing something like that unless I eat a good-sized meal before running.

I think I shared it elsewhere but I've enjoyed Spring Energy gels. They're more expensive than I would like but all natural (blended bananas, rice, etc.) which a lot of people say is easier on the stomach. (My stomach is relatively strong/stable). I also like the Ginger Ale Clif Bloks.
Yup, 2-300 calories an hour is a good goal. More than 300 is pretty hard for most.
