If you're into books, check out Bernd Heinrich's "Why We Run".

    It's still in press.

Bernd was an ultrarunning badass forty years ago, and also a scientist. In this book, he goes into quite a bit of evolutionary development with respect to how and why humans evolved to run, but also throws in fun antidotes.

Just ran 10 miles last night, longest run yet previous was 8 miles. Around the 8 mile mark it started to feel really hard, will probably be adding a little running vest with some snacks next time I got that far.

It seems that every time I push a little further the previous distance feels normal whereas the first time it felt really hard. Hopefully I will get my 13.1 in soon before I lose it all on a long vacation coming up, but that would have to be Tuesday, and not sure I'll be up for it by then.

Fun sport I used to hate on pretty hard, interested to see where it takes me!
Sounds a lot like my trajectory too. C25K as a way to try to get in shape after a knee injury. Ran a 5k, did a "big" 8mi trail run with a couple friends and loved it, signed up for a half marathon trail run and didn't account for the fact that over 3k of vert combined with the longest run of my life would completely smoke me. Ran a road marathon and vowed to never do that again, ran a 50k in the mountains and loved it, ran a 40mi... The races were always just a goal to keep me on track with my training. It just keeps going. But one of the best things really is the freedom that comes from doing a big early morning run through a strange city when on vacation. At this point I will often times plan where I stay on a vacation based on the proximity to good running routes.

Side note, I just bought a Naked Running Band based on a recommendation from a friend. I think it will replace my vest for anything under 15 miles. It holds a soft flask, phone and all of the food I would need for a few hours without any bouncing.

Awesome, Buke! Section J is high on my list, but I planned to fast pack it and split into two days. I was thinking of going North to south to finish closer to home. Looks amazing. Maybe next year for my 50th birthday.

    Running, Anyone...?

Went and got a little lost this morning. Added a few miles and an hour or so of bushwhacking to our planned route. Good times. Ended up around 17.5 mi, 4.5k, and like 6 hrs lol. Miles 4-7or8 were slooooow going. I suppose it’s good to have one of these occasionally to keep me honest!

The doggo tore two pads on the way down today. He could walk but it was like 1 mph at best so I just carried him out the last couple of miles. He's 65 lbs.

I've done that. But the dog only weighed 45lbs. She recovered quickly.

I had a fine little hike/scramble with some running today. Tenmile range traverse from Frisco to where I dropped off of the ridge after peak 8 in strong winds. The scrambling parts were A1 top quality and about as good as 4th class gets. The stuff after pk 5 was not-quite-runnable talusy tundra that I didn't really enjoy. Since you seem to like stats, 12.7 mi, 6411', 5:45.Click image for larger version.

Salomon Adv Skin 12. Not the cheapest, but the best I’ve found. There’s a reason they’re so popular.

was hoping to avoid spending that much on a vest but I guess there's probably a reason why..
seems like all the big names have the pricey ones, didn't know if you're just paying for the name

The answer is the one that fits your torso and has the capacity and features you need.

    This is the correct answer.

Also, Salomon Adv Skin 12. It is pricey, but it just fits so well and carries so much. Because all of the material is stretchy, it carries 1L of water, a few gels, a jacket, and a first aid kit just as well as it carries 12# of food and survival gear on a big adventure. I don't regret spending the money. Maybe there are other options that are just as good for less money? I haven't really tried anything else. But given that it's still going after over 5 years of use, I don't really care if it was an extra $50.

That “fern-y” green pic looks like the s signal cutoff (as do your stats). Had a very similar experience as you described there a few weeks ago. Used, but just enough to still require attention.

Or maybe it just looks like that and you were on a completely different track

About 25-30 miles south of there, but similar elevation, etc so makes sense. Started in Peaceful Valley, over to Rock Creek (getting turned around on the way lol), up Rock Creek to St Vrain trail, down to Buchanan and back.

Looks like Fairchild? We went up the saddle b/t Hagues and Mummy on 4th of July, topped Mummy, down the SE slope and back down Lawn Lake Trail. That was a good one! Maybe one day I'll do Mummy Kill. Just so many good options up there.

I was up in Estes w/ the wife and kids today visiting family up there. You had a nice weather day!

Last week or so I've been feeling 'off' and unmotivated. Probably due to a variety of reasons, but I need to get back in the groove.

Good eye! That was OaB on Lawn Lake trail (Crystal Lake in the photo). I have stayed out of the park for years due to being a mountain biker and recreating w dogs. Bought a pass this year, stoked to explore more.

Buchanan pass is on the list as well, been in the area on skis a bunch, time to explore on foot.
