Speaking of trail running I just did this Cirque Series race today at Alyeska.

3890’ climb in 3 miles then circle back on ridge then come down Max’s. 6 miles total

First year I did it in 1:30 (30th) in mud conditions. Last year got down to 1:20 (11th) in dry conditions . This year the mud was back I got 1:26.

So many fast people showing up ... lucky if I was in top 30 out of 500. Lost ten spots on the DH.

Down track is pure steep mud luge track . On yer ass all the time out of control.

Steep rope section down in trees someone dislodge baby head size rock got my fore arm. If that thing hit me in head I’d be dead.. head first rag doll through trees. Yikes

Time to switch gears back to the pavement. Double up 5k and 10k next weekend then my first road marathon about 8 weeks out.

Don't sweat it. Even elite trail runners mostly walk uphill. They do, however, walk uphill absurdly fast. Uphill running is inherently grossly inefficient compared to running on flat terrain. Power hike up, run the flats and downs.

What Dan said. You can get move pretty fast over mountainous trails if you follow his advice. If you want to nerd out about it even more: https://trailrunnermag.com/training/...er-hiking.html

And Danno, agreed! I love the more-full body workout than trail running provides. I'm currently a flat road runner based on where I'm living, and definitely missing the mountains and trails.

Went for first actual trail run yesterday. Did 8mi on the half course. Going to be hard to justify doing long runs anywhere else. Was way the fuck more pleasant than doing similar mileage in the city. Plus I was able to give zero mental fucks about pace and just run to effort which was a nice zen break.

    This exactly.

Any favorites to build up to? Going to start doing all my long runs on trails in the early AM on weekends.

My favorites in the 8ish mile range in Boulder:

Walker Ranch (see my pics above), Dowdy Draw to Goshawk Ridge, and Green Mountain West Ridge to Green Bear to Bear Peak West are all awesome.

If you want some vert to get ready for ski season, I like Green Mountain going up Amphitheater and down Ranger, or a Bear Peak loop from NCAR (up Fern Canyon, down Bear Canyon).

For something flatter Teller Farm up to the water tower North of Valmont and back is beautiful.

Doebedoe and Snowshow, any interest in meeting up for a run? Danno? I'm coming off injury, but starting to feel ok. Doing the equivalent of two of the above a week at a very leisurely pace along with some shorter runs with my old dog.

My wife is due with our second boy in a month, but I have the (unrealistic?) goal of slowly ramping up the miles and vertical so I can continue my annual tradition of stringing together South Boulder-Bear Peak-Green Mountai-Flagstaff-Sanitas some time in late Oct, or early Nov. Could use some partners to keep me focused when I have newborn helping me sleep. Zero interest in speed this year. Just want to be in adequate shape for ski season and enjoy the trails.

I'd be game for sure if I can keep up. I haven't run much vertical yet so will need to build up that part.

That sounds like a helluva a traverse. What is the mileage/gain on that?

    Good luck on kid #2!

I'm walking anything more than slightly uphill these days and generally forcing myself to go even slower than my legs allow. Need to chill and build up my feet and calves for 5 or 6 more weeks after a winter with pretty much no running. Tore my quad last Oct and even when I could resume skiing/lifting/biking, I'd have excruciating cramping around my knee when I ran. Seems good now, but I'm going to be very, very patient. Slow is what's on the menu, but it feels damn good to be running again.

That traverse is something like 16 miles and 6.5k vert with views of either the mountains or Boulder/Denver for much of the route. Last time I tried I got turned around by a mountain lion at mile 14. Got pretty damn close before I realized those weren't deer eyes reflecting back at my headlamp.

I think I could do Sat or Sun if you're game.

The 55k? I finished!!! That was my goal. The course way much harder than I had even imagined. The first 23 miles were good and I was doing much better than I expected, but then the talus field and downhill from hell. Of course, my fiend that ran it with me and I are already talking about next year. Oh, how quickly we forget! It was beautiful and I really should spend more time up there exploring.

Thanks Nutmeg!! I can't believe I did it! I am so slow, but don't really care. While climbing through the talus from hell at 10K elev. I got mad. I kept telling myself I was going to finish the damn race even if it killed me. Then, I kept telling myself, it's just like hiking the headwall, one foot in front of the other! I was so looking forward to an 8 mile cruise downhill to the finish, but no, it was super steep and rocky for about 2 miles. That made me even madder. Easy downhill to the finish my ass! The last 4.5 miles were probably really nice, but it was dark and at that point and I didn't give a fuck any more. LOL!

I told my my friend at the end "Never Again!" Apparently, we picked a hard one for our first 55k. Of course, an hour later, driving back to the cabin, we were both like, "I think I could do it faster..."
