IMHO any "shock absorbtion" gimmicks under toe AFDs were engineered by the marketing department.

Any Salomon experts ever managed to separate a 997 toepiece from the baseplate, or any similar models which don't separate when you just keep backing out the height adjust screw?

I lost a teflon AFD from my yellow metal 997s last winter and want to keep them going. Picked up some plastic 12 DIN 997s cheap today so I could just swap baseplates instead of doing a DIY AFD replacement, but getting the toepiece off is the problem. Here's a photo. Is this just a washer riveted into place? I'm thinking I could grind the rivet head off from the original and donor pairs and hopefully not mess up the threads. To complicate things, I use them with the toes almost at max height for my Salomon pre-Gripwalk soles so the threads near the end need to stay in good shape.

I guess no harm trying it on the donor bindings first.

EDIT: Hmm, I guess I don't even have to do that. I just needed to separate the metal part of the baseplate. Pretty easy. Stoked to keep these things rolling on new skis.

Anyone know offhand what the toe afd cross- compatibility is to upgrade a 916 from the original "spherical" shape? Not a huge fan of it. Would the afd off of a STH or STH2/WTR work? I'm happy to swap out whatever other parts need to come with to make such a Frankenstein happen. But I ain't got any new stuff to experiment on. Thanks!

Edit, ha I guess I could have read a couple posts up. So I'm taking this to mean, STH2 doesn't work with anything else old, STH16 works with 916 or other all-metal, and 912/914 works with the sth12-14 is that a good summary? Thousand-oaks mostly lookin at you dude

To what extent are toepiece pedestals interchangeable between generations? An STH 14 pedestal cracked in half on me a few days ago while skiing and am now looking for a replacement pedestal. Aside from another STH 14 or STH 12 Driver, anything else that will work with the STH 14 toepiece and AFD? Perhaps 8xx/9xx series with plastic pedestals? I'm not as familiar with the STH2, but would a STH2 13/16 pedestal be interchangeable with the STH toepiece? I do know that STH 16s, 916s, etc. which have metal pedestals won't work without replacing the AFD as well.

I reached out to Salomon to see if they could help out with a spare part, and got a rather terse and unfriendly email back essentially telling me to pound salt and "upgrade your equipment". So now I'm on the hunt for a toepiece to harvest a pedestal from, but looking for any insight from the collective about which ones might work.

Bumping an old thread. I have a minty pair of STH16s with 130mm brakes for sale in GearSwap. But I’m also looking to trade for or buy a pair STH2 90mm brakes. PM me if you have some.

Hey, sorry about the late reply.

The STH14 toe will work with 916/920/sth16 pedestals/afds. If that helps. The Sth14 Afd in turn will work with those pedestals, but will likely leave a gap in front of the pedestals.

Someone confirm my thinking, a newer STH2 WTR jig will work with older 916, or back to 997? Or should I just paper template this from jdrums?

I’ve hand drilled a bunch of both STH14/16s and STH2 13/16s over the past decade. It’s been a few years but I’m pretty sure the heel pattern is not exactly the same.

Copy. Picking up some 997;s in neon to mount on some neon explosiv's for spring skiing. 916/997 would share same pattern from what I read, so I'll see if dibs has that jig.

He probably could drill those without a jig or template at this point.

I was adjusting the heel on some 912s and this little metal piece was sittng in the track.

I stupidly did not take notice of which ski so now not sure which of the bindings this came off of.
I stopped by a shop and in addition to telling me the 912s are no longer indemnified and warning me not to ski them, I was told this piece fits on the front of the spring.

I removed both heels and cannot see where this piece is supposed to fit. Both heels look the same to me.

Can anyone identify this and describe it's function?
Is it crucial to my safety?
    Are these things just toast?
    Thanks

Wow, no idea man. Hopefully someone can chime in and help. That piece doesn’t look broken, like it just rests in somewhere.

Well I feel like a dummy, not sure how I coulda missed that.
    Thanks!

I slid the piece back in but it would only hold on 1 side so one of the pins is gone.
I broke off a nail and stuck it in there a dripped a bit of epoxy.
    See if that works.

No, don't use the runny regular kind---use the putty kind called "Stick Weld" or "J-B Weld Steel Stik", like this:

Well I didn't use the stick... And I have the stick... I used the real OG stuff. I mixed it up, taped off the binding so it would hold the shape I wanted and filled filled filled. Little bit of file work after it dried, and done.Click image for larger version.
