Teton TR: Spoon Couloir, Disappointment Peak 1/30/07

So Sherpastyle and I have been skiing together a fair bit lately and I think she's finally realizing that I am in fact not a raging loose cannon. As a result, she agreed to go touring with me today in GTNP.

APH was kind enough to e-mail a little tick list of sorts for ski touring in the Tetons and this is my first check on that list. Disappointment Peak is just east of the Grand and is so named because an early climbing party thought they were on the Grand, only to discover the huge facking gulf between Disappointment (~11,600') and the next ridge to the west leading up the Grand proper. One can rarely ski from the summit of Dis, as it's a rockfield, but we skied from something like 11,300' through the spoon couloir (~45 deg, 1,300 vert) and down back to Bradley Taggart.

Sherpa skinning - the damn skintrack was super icy from the sun.

Sherpa chilling, with better grip on the shady snow.

    Sherpa booting

    Mo' booting above the spoon.

    Incoming weather

Sherpa running 'em hot on the apron - coolie was smooth, but very firm. Apron was more pow-ish.

nhtele stoked about sliding into homeplate on some saplings after augering his tips into a suncrust.

The ski down from Amphitheater Lake was the definition of variable. Lots of good 5 turn surface hoar shots, but lots of crusts too. A fun day for sure.

    Nice.

Gotta get the Utah contingent back up there for some more "gang banging" in the Tetons.

There you go chest-thumping again, Steve - you must have some sort of attention complex.

Gonna be a cold one tomorrow. I've gotta go dig in the dirt over Victor in the morning but I'm hoping to catch a Glory lap on the way home.

Don't be so sure of yourself there buddy. I'm well aware of the fact that you're a loose cannon. We've talked about this...you know the reason I tour with you.

Yep, it was a super fun day in the Tetons, despite the marginal snow and shitty skinning conditions. Looks like it was prime about a month earlier, but then someone spattered all over the internet about it and it got hammered!

hey colin, if it clears up this evening we're doing a full moon glory if you're interested.

    Excellent work, guys!

JoshP and I had the opportunity to tour up to Amphitheater Lake about a month ago and we were drooling at the Spoon. Way to get after it!

Nice tour guys. One of my favorites. We hit it many springs ago and ran into a bear on the up and down portions.

So nhtele doesn't tele? Are you even really from N.H.?

Well done, Colin. Good to see yall making the most out of the "shitty" snow year, and making me wish I'd been less of a waste of space during my stay in JH.
