    Tahoe Summit car thread

My idea is to make this thread a place where people talk about who is flying in where and how they are going to get around after that. I'm guessing renting a car is the only option for most non locals. I'm flying into Reno at 1:15 AM on the 6th with my gf, and staying in the lodge Shoe lined up. I'd like to split the car costs with some mags / minions that are flying into Reno similar time. I'm staying til the 13th.

For an Explorer It's looking like approx 500 for 8 days, Hertz being the only place I could find that's open when we land, but I haven't searched all of them yet. I would have to pick it up 15 minutes after I land before they close too...

I have a POS Subaru wagon (no ski rack, yet, great car for two people if you throw your skis and gear in the back) and a Jeep Cherokee. I'm thinking I could give it up for someone during the Summit, but it means I have to register and insure the Jeep.
    Probably $300, if anyone's interested.

for what it's worth, i've been looking into rental options from the san francisco airport.... and to rent an suv for eight days is looking like it'll cost around $350. i haven't actually gotten to the point where i'm doing anything other than scanning the net though. best deals look like they're from either avis or a local outfit named fox.

just sharing the info and such, even though most people will be flying into reno. having an suv will be much better than something like a mini van, right? are road crews around tahoe sensitive about having 4wd and/or chains when the going gets rough?

They get pretty anal when it snows. If you get a minivan that's AWD, it's cool. But if there's snow and you have a 2WD, you're likely gonna be chaining up.

Noodles, no prob on the time. Where you staying that first nite?

Maybe it's just a lot more expensive coming out of Reno; we got our 'Splorer for 9 days/$350 with tax from SFO from Hertz.
