    05-06 Scratch BC Review

    Skis: 2005-06 Rossignol SCratch BC
    Length: 185
Bindings and Mount: Look P14 Lifters mounted at the rear line
Conditions: Groomers, mank, crud, crust, and 16"+ of fairly light PNW pow-pow
Duration of use: Skied on two different days so far

    Skier Info: 5'8", 180 lbs.
Ability: Better than some but easily smoked by the pros and bros
    Years skiing: 28
Other Skis I Like: Exploders, Gotamas, LP's, AK Swallows, and Bros (You get the idea)

    Comments:

I have been on this quest to find a fatter all-mtn. twin that is easier on the pilot than my Exploders or LP's, but still can handle the variety of conditions that can be found in the PNW. Last season I went through a set of 179 SV's and a set of 186 Big Trouble and just couldn't find the right balance in either of those. This fall I picked these up for a fairly nice price and I finally decided to mount them and put them through the paces.

Powder: With a profile very close to the SV's (sans the progressive sidecut) they performed very well in the pow. They float nicely and are very agile. I did feel the urge to ride my heels a bit in the uber-deep stuff to keep the tips up (to me the 185 skis short), but it wasn't as bad as some twins I have ridden. When the tips did get buried, the tips pushed through whatever they came in contact with good enough to keep me pointed where I wanted to go. I experienced some deflection in the heavier stuff, but again these were admirable for a hybrid core with no metal. I'd give them a 4.5 out of 5 for pow-pow and a 4 out of 5 for crud.

Groomers: I was happy to learn quickly that these rip medium to long turns on the groomer with a lot of confidence. They sure didn't feel like 98-mm the waist and turned as easy as my 80-mm in the wasit PE's. They have very good grip and never washed out on me despite the freezing rain crap I skied in on the first day on them.

Bumps: Very agile and quick once again. I wouldn't think twice about taking them in the bumps like I would on some stiffer boards.

Speed: They have a limit, but it is higher than I would have first thought for a ski this agile. Definitely higher in the soft stuff vs. variable snow.

Observed Weaknesses: They ski short! I would say that the weight range for the 185 would have to be 150 to 180 lbs. If I were a bit heavier I think I would have overpowered these and hated them. I cannot imagine skiing on the shorter lengths unless one was a lighter weight (<150 lbs) skier. Also, the rear mounting on these sets the bindings up almost identically to 185 PR's mounted on the line, so unless you're going to be landing switch into pow, I cannot see mounting them on the forward line. I seems that it would ruin these in softer/deeper snow. That isn't really a weakness, but more of an observation.

    Overall:

Overall these felt like a beefier Pocket Rocket, which is just as easy and fun to ski (pretty forgiving), but with a higher speed limit and better groomer performance. Coming from the other end of the spectrum, I also kept thinking they were like a Gotama-lite. So, if you cannot tell, I really dig these. They are what I thought I would find in the SV's (but didn't) and will likely be my everyday sticks unless it is uber-deep or I feel like charging, but then again, I have other boards for that...

Nice review. I have the same boards and agree with everything you said here. I certainly wish Rossi made these longer - but at 6'2 180 I still like these for most conditions. If they were just a bit longer they would rule everything

has anyone skied these vs this year's wrs (yellow/white) version? are they less stable given the less weight?

        nice review.

thanks for pointing out that they ski short.

i'm 5'11' 190 (though I should get down to 180 soonish). I ride a range of skis from 177 to 185, but have found the 180 size to be my sweet size (give or take 1-2cm +/-).

i've been trying to find the 185 for demo here in Cali and am coming up zero.

out of curiosity, have you ridden other Rossi's in the past? If so, how do they stack up to say the B series (B3/4/Squad)? I realize that they're a twin, but in terms of flex and whatnot.

Right on review. I bought a pair last month and can't get enough of them.

Dookey, I also have 04-05 B3's. I use the B3 for BC skiing, the Scratch for inbounds. The BC is a better overall, more manuverable all conditions ski. Just like Bandit Man said. Handles pow like a fatty, but skis like a skinny ski on the groomers & bumps.

If it was more stable on hard snow, it'd be a perfect ski.

Stiffer Pocket Rocket is the best I can do. Also, since I compared them to the Seth, I would say these are more akin to the 179 Seth in the 185 size. They are super easy to ski, but not quite a noodle either. Get these and some Squads and you are dialed...

              DAMN!

Just when I thought my quiver was all set (175 Titan 8; 177 Karma; 177 Mantra; 180 No Ka Oi; 185 Spatula).

I'm looking at the Bro, Sick Bird/Scratch BC, King Salmon...having a bitch of a time finding anybody that demos the Scratch BC, though. Did get a semi-line on the Rossi dealer in Tahoe, so I may have to see if I can ride a pair through him.

                Dookey,

I asked my pal in Truckee to send you a line on where to demo the boards in the tahoe area. I don't think anyone in SF is gonna have em...

Hopefully that was the contact you mentioned, if not, you should get another note soon...

                take care,

I have both the PR, Gun and the BC in 185 and agree with everything you have said. Great review by the way! At 6' 170lb I find both skis have their qualities and subsequent uses.

Dookey, I will be in summit county this weekend and Breck for sure on Sunday. Perhaps demoing the BC is a possibility...

I'm glad that you guys are finding the review helpful. I picked these up over Labor Day and actually tried to sell them a few weeks ago since I was feeling a bit of buyer's remorse and a lot of quiver overlap. I'm really glad I decided to keep them and consequently will be selling my PR's and PE's...

Yeah, thanks for the insight BM and everybody else.

I'll be in Summit Country starting Saturday, but not sure where I'mma ride. Planning to ride S/S/M, but we shall see. I'm bringing my shorty Mantras (177), but will probably end up trying out some other planks while in the area. Gonna shoot for a day at Breck (or Vail/BC) and see if I can snatch up the BC's at Carvers for one of 'em.

Also noticed that they have Icelantics at Loveland (never been there or A-Basin).

Nice review. Could you elaborate a little more on what you didn't like about the SV and the BT?

                          Let's see...

Seth's were stellar in the pow and crud for a 179-cm length ski. Defintiely an improvement over the Pistol. I figured that it was a combo of the progressive sidecut and the fact that I had them mounted at the mid-sole mark (most rearward if I recall correctly). It's just when I took them back to anything where I had to edge them, that I hated them. I'm not talking boiler-plate, just soft groomed. I couldn't carve a clean turn to save my life. I know that others here tried the +3-cm mount and had different experiences, but after about 5-days on them, my opinion wasn't changing and I didn't want to drill a ski several times to find the "sweet spot". Obviously, YMMV, but I'm pretty much over the Seth's.

BT's were a good fat twin and leaned to the side of all-mtn. charging versus backcountry booter ski. The tip stiffer than tail set-up made them bust through the PNW mank, but not as friendly in the bumps and on the groomers. I liked these a lot more than the Seth's and would have been satisfied keeping them, but I already have Gotama's in the quiver (which these are like, IMO), so I wanted a twin that was a little more "fun".

After a few more days on the BC's, I'd say that they have the lowest speed limit compared to the SV and BT, but are the quickest and easiest to ski. I skied them on for 5-hours yesterday on blue groomers with my 7-year old and was quite happy with them.

Good review, this is pretty much right on with my thoughts. At 190-195 I would like it in a 188-189 but it's still a fun ski. It'll even kill pipe/park.

thanks for the review. this is totally gonna be a noob question, but is the scratch bc the same ski as the scratch create it bc or are there differences besides the graphics?
