Nothing to add really, just wanted to post in what I'm sure will be an important thread, and commend you for your effort.

Good thread. Maybe a book list would help too. Snow Sense for starters.

Nice work Lee. The intended point of this tread was to impress upon beginner backcountry skiers the importance of an avalanche beacon and CPR skills.

I was up Butler Gulch yesterday, and was amazed at how people can have the "equipment" but not practice any avy safety at all. We climbed up to this chute, 2 pairs fo skiers had gone before us. I round the corner to find one woman on the track across the chute, choosing this spot to de-skin. Her partner is above her, de-skinning as well. 2 people are on the other side of the chute, I thought they were being smart, but apparently not.

The woman in the middle sees me eventually and apologizes for being in the way, I tell her it's ok because I wouldn't cross the chute while she was out there anyway. Can't tell if she knew why I said that or not. Anyhow, she skis down, partner waits a bit and skis after her. The people across also ask me if their in my way, I say no, I can wait, I'd have to wait until they both go anyhow. I thought they got it, but the guy skis down, and the girls skis down 10 seconds latre while he is still in the chute!

Now, there was very little likelihood of this chute sliding, but it most definitely was capable of sliding. What the fuck is the point of carrying the packs and the shovels and beacons and stuff if you ski on top of each other in an avy chute????

And it seems like common sense to me, but maybe a jong checklist of steps you need to take/equipment you need to have before heading out there.

    Avy I Class

    Beacon/Shovel/Probe.

    And PRACTICE

And maybe someone wants to draft up a generic paragraph just explaining why backcountry can be so dangerous, and how newbs should go about starting small and safely.

I know a lot of people that aren't neccesary the TGR/backcountry crowd stumble across TR's here, and some might get the wrong idea about the bc. A link to this thread would be a nice thing to have at the end of TR's.
