Deep day on Crested Butte's Mount Baldy TR 11.12.06

goldenboy, mtnbikerskierchick, non-mags Jay and Ethan
    11.12.06

Mount Baldy is a 12,805' peak just north of Crested Butte near Paradise divide. It is one of the area's most reliable early season places to go. Because of that, it is often a complete junkshow- I once saw a WSC kid carring a garden shovel in his backpack, sticking 3 or 4 feet above his head. At least he had A shovel... Even yesterday, in the snow and wind, there was another group in the lower bowl and 2 other groups on the opposite side of the mountain coming up from Washington gulch. Our original plan was to ski the purple palace, but the lower pitches were pretty lacking in coverage and we headed up to Baldy instead.

The skin up was kind of rowdy- lots of snow and wind and the wind even gave Jay a touch of frostbite on his nose. We made it eventually and skied the bowl in poor light but found deep conditions. This is one of the few shots when you can actually see me:

After out first run, things started to clear up a little, although it continued to snow a little:

So we decided to skin back up and hit a nice pitch in the lower part of the bowl. Our first run tracks are visable in the left hand side of the bowl.

Here's Jay, on his first turn on our second lap (you might be able to make out a pole basket if you look hard enough)

Back out of the white room:

    Ethan's turn:

    MBSC:

Not a bad day at all. It started snowing again this morning, with another 6-8" falling here in town by this afternoon. Keep it coming Ullr

Classic. I can totally see you sitting there twitching to the point of spilling your wine. However, to ease your pain I'll let you know that it didn't look quite that good in lower Castle Creek yesterday. Maybe that's more painful. Sorry.
