Webdesigners - Alternative to Dreamweaver
Any suggested html editors &/or design tools?
I do quite a bit of html prototyping based upon DW templates. I've done some looking around and there doesn't seem to be any other tools that have the functionality I'm looking for...
Easy file management
Easy to apply templates
Stable (ie doesn't require re-installation every few months like DW does)

Frankly, DW is the best. No other app has the superior file management/integrated FTP combined with a wysiwyg/code IDE. Even as a pure text editor, DW rocks. Everything else you find will satisfy one of these features, but not all.
Eclipse(and its many spinoffs which package it with web dev plugins) is super heavy since it's Java, and Nvu just straight sucks. Bluefish and Quanta Plus are just glorified text editors.. I don't know what to tell you. DW is it. Maybe find an older copy of Homesite?Last edited by bio-smear; 11-01-2006 at 03:28 PM.

i work in a microsoft shop now, one of our lead developers uses vi in cygwin to write C# code in an application that is just about to hit 1 million LOC.

I think dreamweaver's .dwt templates are awesome. dreamweaver is the best in my opinion...its great for editing the templates, individual pages, css, etc. all at once.

Not that anybody cares, but what i left out is that I was using DW MX (v6.1 vintage ~2002?).
I had to look for other tools before trying to justify upgrading to version 8.
I agree with you l33t h4x0rz about vi etc... but DW really does do the best job and all w/in one application.

Doesn't anybody just use a text editor (like emacs)? Seems like the code looks like shit w/ all the WYSIWYG editors.
Not that I'm very good at html/css, but my bro was the one that taught me, and he's definitely super-geeky.Last edited by ljm; 11-02-2006 at 07:40 PM.
It's not that I'm lazy, it's that I just don't care.

Is Go-Live crap these days? That's what I used in another life, years ago, and I dug it. The grids were money for putting shit where you wanted it. Code was a bit bloated, but not as bad as other offerings.
Remind me. We'll send him a red cap and a Speedo.

WYSIWYG editors do make shitty code, but it's fairly helpful for peeps like me who do mostly manual html coding, and use the WYSIWYG window just to navigate to the appropriate place w/in the page I need to modify. If I were doing any heavy scripting, I'd certainly be using a more sophisticated tool.

you can get GoLive in the current CS2 suites that are still on the market but it's gonna go bye bye and be replaced with DreamWeaver when CS3 comes out early next year.
ImageReady will also go away in favor of fireworks for GFX opt. etc... this is the one that will really kill me. i like how ImageReady works and integrates with PhotoShop. hopefully they work that into the revised FireWorks.

Fireworks is being modified to function like Image Ready with the integration.
GoLive is being replaced with Dreamweaver.
And Lightroom is the fucking bomb. The only thing worse than the feeling that you are going to die is the realization that you probably won't.

I like the way Fireworks handles slicing WAY more than Illustrator/ImageReady. I hope they don't fuck that up.
It would be cool to have a better Fireworks -> Illustrator import too, since I've put in a lot of time on Fireworks layouts, and the export to Illustrator is pretty clumbsy.
