aha - some developer was shilling places downwind of Lafarge as view lakeside property and somehow i got on the email list. I wonder if it was the same thing.

if they build jumbo i'd go to ski there. provided they don't charge me vail-level of money. why is it so much cheaper to ski in europe?

speaking of which, I give you this brainfart from section 2.4.2 of the Executive Summary of the Master Plan:
A warming trend could increase precipitation and snowfall in areas that are hard to pinpoint but that could easily include the higher elevations of the interior of B.C.

Yep, if it gets built I'd ski there.
But no way it happens with the state of recreation real estate right now in B.C. Too much inventory out there and too few buyers. Maybe in 10 years if the U.S. or Europe doesn't drag the world back into a recession.

Right now without Jumbo there are too many ski resorts and not enough skiers in B.C. The resorts that will likely experience the most negative effects from Jumbo are ones that are struggling now: Revy, Kicking Horse, and Panarama and some of these could go under on their own without Jumbo even being built.

You can see the number of skiers dropping in Whistler Blackcomb and the Local North Shore mountains even now.
The skiing is great right now!
I don't think there is enough interest for long enough in the season to keep all these resorts going.Looking to ride the shore but don't know where to go?

This is interesting for sure but they need a 1700m top to bottom tram IMO. If you can't connect all that vert in one run it would be a shame. I'm still doubtful it'll happen based on current economics. Also, year round skiing is not a selling point. Sure WE love it but we represent less than 1% of the skiing public. Truth is, there is almost no demand for skiing past april and resorts that stay open later lose money on all the dirtbag season pass holders (like myself) milking it.

I heard a bit on the radio about this today. I thought it was funny that the one native band that I guess is involved says they will see it built 'no matter what'. Another band that I guess may not be involved said they will definitely stop it from being built 'no matter what'. Of course that may just be code for 'we need more money for this'. The developer said today he thinks he could be up and running in two years. Claims he was involved in building KH in 6 months.
It's just starting to get fun.
God help us if it gets built RCR doesn't buy it too in 10 years.It's not so much the model year, it's the high mileage or meterage to keep the youth of Canada happy

they won't be able to connect it. look at the map linked to a page earlier: in the master plan there's one lift (to peak) over terrain which doesn't include any runs. it goes from 2690 to 3410 (the elevation of the Jumbo Mtn peak).
it may be the best steep skiing west of chamonix, but it's south facing so it could just as well have no snow on it and a lot of overhang...
edit: here's the peak, lower right in the of this map (overexposed due to glacier). you tell me if it's skiable on the south side:

The band that supports it is the Shuswap, which I don't think is anywhere close to where it's being built, so I'm a bit confused as to why they keep getting referred to (but someone else might be able to clarify this). The band that opposes it seems to have a direct relationship with the land, but I couldn't find their name in a short search. The CBC seemed to say that they were pretty set on opposing this so it will be interesting to see how far they'll go. There's not much love lost between the natives and the Canadian government.
As for me, if I'm that far from Vancouver in the summertime I've got 3 bikes on my car and there's no room for skis. If this thing is a go, I hope the Euro/US economy get back on their feet in 2 years.Last edited by dawnchairy; 03-21-2012 at 12:20 AM.

Even if the media got it right which is doubtful you might need a program to understand 1st nations politics
there is already a glut of ski hill RE in BC so I can't see where they are going to sell the RE
sure I will ski jumbo ...quickly before the $ problems hit

Hey all,
I am from Valemount. Canoe Mountain is effectively dead, although the proponent got as far as securing some land at the base of the mountain. But this land is useless to him unless he first builds a gondola......not gonna happen soon. Mike Weigele is based out of Blue River (one hour south of Valemount), and he has a ski hill proposal called Saddle Mountain. It would be comparable to Revelstoke, but not quite as big. Amazing snow though. But the real ski development in Valemount you are all referring to has already been filed and a formal proposal is being drawn up as we speak. It is being planned by Oberto Oberti, same as the Jumbo and Kicking Horse, and would in fact be bigger than the Jumbo. It will also have the world's longest continuous in-bounds vertical (2300metres) and snow comparable to Reve, with far more sunlight. It will also feature summer skiing on two separate glaciers with 700 and 400vert metres respectively. The top lift will drop skiers and sightseers at an elevation of 3200m. Bottom elevation just over 800. Ambitious project, but alot going for it, since all of the million busloads of tourist destined for the Colombia Icefields already pass through (and some even stay) in Valemount. The top lift will feature an amazing view of Mt.Robson similar to that of the Matterhorn in Zermatt. There is also an impressive view of the expansive Premiere Range Icefield, and Sir Wilfrid Laurier (3500m) is only 3km from the top lift offload at 3200m. Check it out on Google! An entirely new class of resort for North America, and for all you people who think Whistler is an amazing "world-class" resort, time to get outside of your bubble! The rest of the world simply does not agree! Great party town, shitty skiing!
In addition, the airport in Valemount already has an expansion plan in place for a 6000ft runway (currently 4000 with lights, satellite and fuel) and the highways to and from Valemount are amazingly flat, straight and never closed.

It is a beautiful area to ski and hike. If you're in the area I suggest Jumbo Pass. They're going to have fun building an access road in there and with the two bands against each other it's going to make an interesting battle for years to come.
I heard it said that somebody from the Whitetooth crew started discussing expanding the ski area a a party. Next thing you know, Oberti jumped in and threw a few lifts up. Ballast Nedam had to do another project in Canada as a part of the Confederation Bridge project, that project was KH. The rest is history......

I think the shuswap band has a small reserve between Radium and Invermere. That seems odd given the location of Shushswap Lake but place names and band names don't always jive (or ever).
The supposed involvement with a band is about the smartest thing done so far. It really played on politician's desires to 'fix' the native issues and allow them some form of self direction. I think it is the main factor that got the whole thing this far. Apparently construction jobs and ongoing jobs and I would guess a casino are to go to natives thereby 'fixing' their economic woes.It's not so much the model year, it's the high mileage or meterage to keep the youth of Canada happy

Here a map showing, VERY roughly, the territory claims of 1st nations in BC. http://www.bced.gov.bc.ca/abed/map.htm The Shuswap peoples traveled extensively on the Columbia river as well as the Thompson, which is why their territory extends into the Columbia R headwaters around Invermere/Canal Flats.

there are always disputes over which band owns which territory and then there will be disputes within that band but because there are no land claims its a real problem if you want to develop anything like a pipeline or a ski resort

As I mentioned once before, this development is much larger than the ski resort alone. If this project does not go through http://www.purcellgreenpower.com/home.html, then neither does Jumbo resort. It is one of the main reasons initial resort access was considered through Horsethief Cr (and may still be on the table). Without that power, there is too much load and risk associated with the power supply servicing the Invermere-Golden system. And the power project is where the greatest public tax subsidies (and BC hydro rate setting) will occur.
