Pano gets no snow. It all drops on Jumbo. If Pano can get 1,500 then for sure Jumbo can get 2,700 with great snow and high alpine experience.

well well....... there is no doubt that this would be the first time lifts have run to real terrain in the interior. Anybody who has toured, sledded, flown in the Purcells/Selkirks/monashees knows that places like Reveljunk are just that, junk compared to what is out there.

But, i highly doubt that this will happen, the road alone is a deal breaker, I beleive it would require heavy avy control, massive upgrades up the Toby canyon stretch. It is a billion dollar project deep in the wilderness, I can;t see how funding for that comes. As well, the whole thing would forever cut the connectivity of the area for wildlife so if anyone is honest about that it won't pass. Why are these developers trying to go so deep? It is a big ugly ass plan that no doubt is fueled by dreams of real estate money. Where are the people gonna come from? If the planners are as incompetant as ski hill managers tend to be then they are way over their heads, That is full on Euro terrain back there. I wonder if they even know what they are trying to do???? I mean from a business perspective they could build something sick right off an established road in Valemount and save themselves oh oh oh half a billion dollars.....but me think they think the gov't will pay fer da road eh? Dirty, the locs don;t want it and economic benefit goes not to any community but to some distant conglomerate.

I have to agree, Jumbo would be nothing like Pano at all, so its really no comparison. Pano is an ice rink. Basically they get no snow at all because of all the huge peaks like Jumbo sitting just west of it. This will not be like any other resort in North America. It will be closer in comparison to the resorts in the Alps. The village will never compare but a glacial skiing experience such as up at Jumbo is not offered as of now in NA. Not to mention some of the gnar and ski mountaineering opportunities that would lie off of the nearly 11000 ft high gondola. I'm surprised more mags would not be stoked to ski at a place like this so close to home.

I'll speak for why I'm pissed. They've been pushing for this resort for 20+ years now, what a waste of everybody's time. The skiing in Jumbo is great, but that's because there's not a resort there. Just seems a bit illogical to punch in a new resort when the existing resorts in the area aren't exactly filling their pockets. With this new model of the ski resort having their hands in everything (i.e. owning liquor stores, restaurants, bars, grocery stores, etc.), it's not going to be long before the average skier is sleeping in their car at the resort and cooking breakfast in the parking lot.

Jumbo claims that the largest ski company in the world (CDA) turns a profit on lift tickets. That's great, too bad JGR doesn't own resorts like Val D'isere and Chamonix. It'll be a long time before they pay back the road, lifts, hotels, and services that they have to build. Is the ski area necessary, not really our lives will go on. Is it wanted? By some. Do they really think they're going to turn a profit?

Maybe because the mags who give two shits realize "the glacial skiing experience" sucks? It's the other things Around that are fun and you can get those at, say, Whistler...... Which for the 99.9% of the world is a lot closer to home ie easier to. But you've already got your lips wrapped around one shitty real estate ski area time to dump after youve pumped and move on to the next

Making the numbers work on 2700 a day sounds ugly

is 2700 skiers a daily average over x days per year? Pretty easy to distort if so....

Someone else quite rightly said 2700 at the Lake is a quiet day, but methinks 2700 averaged over the season might be closer to reality than most people realize.

Hopefully this thing won't actually go ahead.. but then again everyone always thought Revelstoke was going to go broke years ago but somehow the lifts keep on turning.

Sure Pano does not set any records for total snow but there is good skiing(over 500cm this yr) and the village is catered to families, that is what is keeping it alive. What is wifey and a couple of toddlers going to do at Jumbo? This takes out a large number of available skiiers.

It is not like Pano doesn't get any snow. Obviously they do and a lot of people vacation there. I don't know stats, just what I've been told by friends. They also say that is has some awesome groomers that burn thighs better than anywhere. My Ontario friend worships Pano for that one long run that goes top to bottom 4000 feet. Just looks like the location of Jumbo does take a lot of the fresh stuff.

IMO Pano has nothing to lose to Jumbo IMO. They will probably benefit each other as more people will look to that geographic area and the options it provides. Kindof like Walmart as an 'Anchor' at the mall for lots of other smaller stores.

Skiing on a glacier is great, when its sunny...

How many days of sunshine will this area get.

If they think people will come there to ski in the summer... good luck. Ski visits are down in whistler and the local north shore mountains and its only march...

I just thought about the fact that there are no trees up there.

Wind is going to be an issue and I would say at KH we have low vis 40-60% of the time. Trees help vis and block the wind, hmmmm.

Bingo. I don't think anyone actually likes skiing by braille above treeline in a white out. The masses certainly aren't going to go out of their way to ski at a resort that gets a reputation for that if there are plenty of alternatives with good skiing below treeline.

I see you've never skied at Alyeska in the winter.

This is actually the PROOF that this project is about real estate/development... when you can't ski, you can eat and drink.

    good point.

Also, would they push for Olympic $$$? Summer training for xcountry, slopestyle, pipe, moguls, racing ect.... ect...? Not huge money but could be some added income to the resort as well. As stated before if they build it i will ski it. I still get my jib on. I wouldn't mind a few days skiing park in July and august

it's already been mentioned a few times, but...euro style alpine skiing? i'll let the euros hang on to it. i'd take tree skiing (even when it's tracked out) at my little resort any day over heavily exposed, 'year-round' alpine at (what will be) a regularly tracked out jumbo resort.

apart from a 'new alpine experience' that north americans aren't used to, i don't really see the point of going forward with this endeavour. the locals hate the idea, the $$$ isn't justified in spending to develop the infrastructure (and where's it coming from?). kind of like the peak to peak @ whistler. super long span, super high gondola height....just to say they could set some silly world records? killer bargain, @ $51M. correct me if i'm wrong, but it didn't open up any new real terrain, correct? makes for a good heli/plane choke-slam and scenery wrecker, however.

Various olympic teams (snowboard & moguls at least) already train up there in the summer! They had a temporary diesel powdered tow up there a few years ago ( I assume its still used?).

IME teams generally only pay enough to cover costs for special training days anyways, hills don't really make money from it.

There will be tree skiing. Phase 1 plan is for 3 fixed grip quads from the base with around 2000vft of tree skiing. The master plan also mentions that due to the mountains to the west of glacier dome, clouds tend to be pushed up above glacier dome allowing for acceptable visibility even during bad weather. RK-heli noted in their appeal that this was their go to spot during times of poor visibility.

Haven't had a look at the plan yet, I assume the 2,700 skier visit/day number is phase 1? How many beds are phase 1? Laughed out loud at 5,500, plus the road. To me, this is more pie in the sky than Revy's build out plan. Of course I will go ski there if it is built (inlaws live in Cranbrook, but then again may as well ski Fernie when I'm there).

the alpine teams trained on Farnam glacier and all access was with cats. coda has removed everything from the area.
The first year up there they flew the cats in by chopper!

My point was that I like to ski by Braille above treeline in a storm. Its a learned skill.

uummm it did go broke. Doesn't really look like the new owners that probably got a relative bargain are finding it easy either. I think last season they were about 90,000 skier visits for the year. This year may be better but not sure how much given they're trimming days at the beginning of March. Lake Louise has gone about 500,000 visits a year over about 150 days for somewhere around 3500 visits a day average.

I took that 2700 number to be at build out and thought it was pretty bizarre to support 20+ lifts. OTOH it could include a lot of open days in summer for glacier skiing with only a few hundred skiers expected.
It's not so much the model year, it's the high mileage or meterage to keep the youth of Canada happy
